Soundtrack Central The best classic game music and more

Yoichi Wada just announced it in the Microsoft press conference.  Good to know that I now have almost no reason whatsoever to get a PS3 on my new teacher salary.  Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go visit other internet forums to watch the wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Arcubalis Jul 14, 2008

Haha, just gotta wait for Suikoden VI, huh?  ;D

That's the only game I'll buy a PS3 for.

Cram Jul 14, 2008

well there's goes the only reason I wanted / needed a PS3.
With Resident Evil 5 and now FFXIII on 360....I think I'll save the extra $400.

allyourbaseare Jul 14, 2008

Link or it's not true.

- nevermind, saw it on destructoid.  You would think it'd be given alot more attention that a teeny little bullet.

I personally have no desire to play FFXIII in any way, shape, nor form. The only reason I can see getting a PS3 is to for backwards compatible games. That doesn't mean it won't eventually get good games of course... and although MGS4 is a hit, I've had no desire to play that title either (at the moment). As for a 360, I don't see myself picking up one of those until Microsoft has them installed with the newer and better chips. I've heard rumors they have been or will be doing that, but who knows? Anyway, I think it's clear that at the moment the 360 has a much better library of games, and with games like Fable 2 coming out, the 360 looks like the next-gen system to own! By the way, despite the innovation, I have a hard time calling the Wii a "next-gen system", although it is great smile

cheers,

Well, come to think of it, this WOULD be pushing me a little closer to an XBox360.

FFXIII's supposed exclusivity and backward compatibility were about the only thing that made me keep a glimmer of hope for the PS3. However, the cost of said system and the fact that you only get BC with SPECIFIC MODELS of the system is just irritating. And now with the exclusivity GONE...

Since I'd be able to play both FF13 and Silent Hill: Homecoming on the 360 - and maybe even give Eternal Sonata a spin one of these days - it sure looks a lot more tempting to me.

And hey...if I want to enjoy my older PS# games, I'll just hunt down a PS2 slimline for cheap.

Wanderer Jul 14, 2008

Ouch. I picked up my PS3 three days ago. This stings.

On the other hand, there's some good games for the system, the DVD upscaling is very handy and it's always nice to have a blu-ray player. And the PS2 upscaling has been put to the test several times.

Plus, it's a good bet that the PS3 version will be the preferred one. Who knows what compromises they'll have to make to fit the game on multiple DVDs.

allyourbaseare Jul 14, 2008

At least Sony still has Level5.  White Knight Story looks fantastic.

Kenology Jul 14, 2008

What a MAJOR coup for Microsoft.  And I honestly ROFLed so hard when I saw this because I knew the meltdown it would cause on the internet.  The next few days of E3 are going to be fun indeed if this is any indication.  Sony better have damn good showing or a megaton to off-set this, because LBP, Killzone 2, and R2 are just not gonna be enough.

So many comments on the Kotaku and Joystiq blog posts... it's all so much to digest!  I haven't even visited Gametrailers and VGChartz yet...

Teh internets is exploding.

Try gamefaqs. It's hysterical to watch. I'm seriously tempted to pull out the popcorn. wink

Totally unrelated, but I'm curious... Why?

It's in the seventh generation era of consoles, just like the PS3 and XBox360.  Unless you define next gen as HD graphics, which doesn't make much sense, but I digress.

Cedille Jul 14, 2008

The trailer music is really yawn.

It'll have the worst soundtrack since FFIV.

Because it is just two Gamecubes taped together.

That's an odd comment, given that FFIV is one of the best FF soundtracks.

Anyway, Hamauzu is in charge of FF13 and I'm expecting great things.

Adam Corn Jul 14, 2008

I think Square knows they were going to take a sales hit with FF13, not just because of the PS3's still limited user base but because of a growing apathy in the North American market with the FF series (I don't think it's just me).  So they've taken previously unthinkable, drastic measures to try and counteract it.

I also think it's funny how Square and even Microsoft have so blatantly admitted what a lost cause the 360 is in Japan by not offering a port for the market there.

I can understand the impact this would have for FF fans who already have a 360.  But as someone who does not yet own either a PS3 or 360 (just Wii), I'm still more interested in the PS3.  It seems more future-proof that the 360 and its exclusives at this stage are more enticing.

And count me as another who feels that White Knight Story looks far more appealing than FF13 anyway.

longhairmike Jul 14, 2008

as much as square loves rereleased, theyll put it on every console.

im just happy that beautiful katamari is finally slated for ps3... that is when ill be getting a ps3.

What PS3 exclusives?  I think the 360 exclusives and the XBL service (gaming, videos, etc) are superior to the PS3.  Although, I'd rather get FFXIII on the PS3 just so I won't have to swap discs.

XLord007 Jul 14, 2008 (edited Jul 14, 2008)

I personally have no interest in FF13, but this is good news for MSFT, especially in America.  It's not going to help them in Japan where the 360 version may not even be released (doesn't make much sense, but we'll see), and I don't think this will make much of difference in Europe where Sony's more international approach and less emphasis on manly American games makes its brand more appealing anyway.  Still, in the U.S., this should prevent a certain segment from jumping on the goodship PS3, at least until FFvsXIII and KH3 come out. ;-)

Ryu wrote:

White Knight Story and MGS4, which is exactly two more than interest me for Xbox.  (I figure Ace Combat will come to PS3 eventually.)

Yes, PS3 exclusives do exist.

GoldfishX Jul 15, 2008

Somewhere in a back alley, Sony execs are committing ritual suicides. Details at 11.

Figures I bought a 360  for something else entirely, now I have the option of playing FFXIII if I so choose. Who knows...FFX turned out to a cool playthrough (even though I wouldn't have bought a PS2 for it).

SonicPanda Jul 15, 2008

Cheers to this, I say. It means an RPG both I (a PS3 owner) and my sister (a 360 owner) can play without having to lug consoles hither and yon. Third-party exclusives should really end altogether. Between this and Bioshock jumping ship, I think it's obvious Sony and Microsoft have effectively splintered the high-end market, and companies can't limit themselves to half-court anymore.

That said, I'm still glad to have a PS3, not just for MGS4. I like the ability to upscale PS2&1 games, watch downloaded videos off a PC-burned disc, and use USB devices with little-to-no difficulty.

Oh, and Fumito Ueda's a Sony guy, and I'm not missing out on his next project for nothing. Alas, hypocrisy.

James O Jul 15, 2008

I just hope they don't cut stuff out of the PS3 version just so they can make it fit on dvd's for 360.

Zorbfish Jul 15, 2008

Not that big of a surprise,... they're just going where the players are. So basically the PS3's library will be ported to the 360 for US consumption.

Yeah, I think IV is where FF music started sounding great (excepting X-2 and spin-offs), and what I wanted but failed to say was XIII would be equally bad as I to III, or even worse. We'll see.

As for the topic itself, I think it's actually good news for both SE and us, although it won't still be released on Xbox360 in my soil. ;(

I just thought of something...  was this how the Nintendo fanboys felt after Square moved to the Playstation?

To be honest, I don't think this is in the same league. In a certain sense many expected this to happen...

Indeed.  It's not like FFXIII is now exclusive to the 360.  Resident Evil having become exclusive to Gamecube for a short while was more shocking news than this, and RE4 wound up getting ported to the PS2 later on anyways.

But yeah, Nintendo fanboys felt betrayed as well when Square jumped ship to Sony.  Yet I (something of a Nintendo loyalist at the time) picked up a PS1 for FFVII anyways.  It's one thing to feel like a company might lead gaming in the wrong direction, but quite another to deny yourself the opportunity to play great games.

The only people who should be a bit bothered by this FFXIII news are those who picked up a PS3 exclusively for it.  However, some of the Sony fanboy reasonings for why this news is bad are as ridiculous as they are ironic.  I'm talking about Sony fans saying that Microsoft is evil because they have too much money made from non-gaming revenue to throw at this, that gaming is now going to favor quantity over quality, that Microsoft panders to gamers of less discriminating tastes..  Does that sound familiar?  It should because that's what Nintendo fans have always said about Sony.  Now the Sony fans view Playstation as representing hardcore gaming and they feel the 360 is going to ruin that.  One guy said that he was going to quit gaming over this news and that the game is now destined to be a failure because it won't take advantage of PS3's superior power.  It's all quite idiotic.

*raises hand*

Well, that's not entirely true... there are going to be alot of good games for the PS3 eventually, and it is nice to have the blu-ray player too, but FFXIII (and the assumption that SQEX & Sony were "real tight" with each other) was the big selling point.

Qui-Gon Joe Jul 16, 2008

Not that I'm not guilty of it (having bought my PS2 around the time FFX came out, but mostly because I wanted to eventually play Xenosaga), but it seems extremely silly to me to buy a system for promised software rather than software that's already available.  Way too many things can happen in development.  Just ask anyone who bought a Gamecube, excited about those pictures of Donkey Kong Racing and Kameo: Elements of Power printed on the back of the box.

I suppose you could make the argument with the PS3 that if you want a decent version of the console, you need a launch model.  I can't believe they're replacing everything with a non-backwards compatible 80 gig system in the fall.  Thanks for convincing me that I never really want your system, guys (but that's a whole other discussion).

And so comes the painful realization that big companies are only ever "real tight" with whatever gets them the moolah.

It looks like FFXIII won't be propelling the PS3 to the top the way that FFVII did the PS1.  Has Sony finally been dethroned, or will PS3 make a comeback and claim the top position?

Indeed.  Nintendo got everyone attached to Rare in the N64 days and then sold them off while Rare fans who bought Gamecubes were still expecting some new titles.

I completely don't understand this mentality.    If you guys are so damn concerned about playing PSX and PS2 games, why do you want a $400 system to do that when you can get a PS2 for much, much less.  I bought a PS3 so I could play PS3 games.  I couldn't care less if it plays PSX or PS2 games.
