I put three or four days into the game before I beat it. I was hooked! Great game, pretty beefy but - as Angela said - in a GOOD way. Definitely worth the time and emotion to make it all the way through.
And as far as closure goes... the only person you'd be denying by not finishing MGS3 is yourself, man. It's a treat.
