NiGHTS for the Nintendo Wii...bother or don't bother?

I've heard it's disappointing in comparison to the original game on the SEGA Saturn, and it's down to $20 for a reason, I'm sure...

...granted, I've never played the original game before, so...yeah...

Jay and I had impressions on the game back when it was released:

For my part, I enjoyed it, and it's an easy recommendation for $20.  I could've done without the on-foot portions of the game, and I've always hated that they make you start all the way back to the beginning during the chase levels.  The game also plays better on the Gamecube controller than the Nunchuck/Wiimote combo.

Speaking of which, this thread on Neogaf detailing the riff between Sonic Team and Sega Japan regarding Wii NiGHTS is a pretty fascinating read.

Yeah, for $20, I'd say go for it. It has some very poor sections and terrible cut scenes but the good stages are, in my opinion, very good and it has some lovely music.

Yeah, I don't know. I really, really, REALLY wanted to love it, but they did so much in the way of change to small things that really hindered it for me. NiGHTS (the character) was so fascinating because of its' ambiguity, but for this one, he was turned into a flying jackass. I don't get why he needed a voice. That owl, too. What the hell, dude? Go back to the Hundred Acre Wood, you freak!

Really liked the music, though. Still need to pick up that disk. And the original, but vgmworld.com has me believing it's stupid rare.

Search your local K-Marts.  I grabbed a copy there for $5.  Haven't had the time to try it out much, though (plus I want to play the original first...).

Y'know where all the speed that the Sonic games used to have? It went into this game!

Music's awesome. A mix of upbeat, but still rather relaxing tunes. Has a very Summery flavor to it.

Just curious as to why, when you're playing as the kids, you're able to move in 3D, but when you transform into Nights, it becomes side-scrolling? Granted, flying in 3D might actually be complicated. It's just kind of weird, how you transform from moving on 3 axeses to 2 axeses is all.

You don't really do much as the kids, either, so they could've stood to just have made them the people you rescue or whatever, and just left them out of the gameplay.

And why does Nights have a female voice? Well, to be fair, can't say I even envisioned him (she?) (it?) as male, either...

At any rate, I think I'll rather enjoy this game, and rather relax while I'm playing it. And for $20 or less, I'm not going to complain.

After all, I never played the original game on the SEGA Saturn, so I've no point of comparison.

See, I never had the chance to play the original...

This's a REALLY short game, each character only has 3 different regions, for a total of 6 regions, each with about 4-5 levels each, the first level being the only full-length level, though there are exceptions.

They really expect you to ace each of the levels in order to REALLY get your money's worth out of the game (I guess the game's length was definitely a reason they didn't try to squeeze $50-40 out of you for this), which, it can be challenging just to FINISH some of the levels. The game boasts some pretty "old school" difficulty.

But, hey, I actually got a reason to actually use my Wii...
