Soundtrack Central The best classic game music and more

So, anyone else willing to make some stabs at who did what, composer-wise? Just making educated guesses on stage themes for now.

Blademan - I'm guessing this one's by Shusaku Uchiyama. It has a lot in common with his MM8 work.
Solarman - Yasuaki Fujita? I hear a lot of Shadowman in here.
Sheepman - Wouldn't be surprised if this was Akari Groves. Not only is :39-1:07 very much her melodic style, but she did work on the Battle Network series, and I can see Capcom being sly about that.
Chillman - Ippo Yamada, maybe. Parts make it sound like a sister piece to  the Glacier Le Cactank theme from Zero 3.
Commandoman - Yuko Takehara. No doubt in my mind.
Nitroman - Ryo Kawakami, on the grounds that it is awesome and he's Rockman's brightest star of late.
Strikeman - I want to say Yu Shimoda. The busier parts remind me of Concreteman.
Pumpman - Maybe Mari Yamaguchi. The last part of the melody before the loop is very reminescent of Crystalman's.
Wily Stage 1 - Miniami Matsumae. Because this is where the first lady of MM music should be.
Wily Stage 2 - Hiroki Isogai. His Groundman arrangement on the Chiptuned album has the same rhythmic hook and he puts a lot of energy in his pieces.
Wily Stage 3 - Minae Fujii, very focused on rhythms and has MM4's unique melancholy sound.
Wily Stage 4 - Umm, no clue.
Wily Stage 5 - I'm going to say Makoto Tomozawa, it could pass for a Legends piece in 8-bit.

I definitely think this one is Ippo Yamada. The part at ~0:12 seconds (in the Youtube videos of the music, sounds very much like Tornadoman to me, which Ippo-san was responsible for. Of course, I could be wrong, but I swear I hear it.

Solar Man - Someone needs to make a Rock arrangement of this, PRONTO.

There's two remixes currently on youtube, actually, Solar Eclipse and Red Hot Flare. The one who did the latter has also done mixes for Strikeman, Sheepman, and Pumpman, the last of which I think is a huge improvement on the original.

Now that you mention it, I can hear it too. Good catch. I just hope we don't have to wait for the Image album before we get a proper breakdown.

God, Blade Man is really awesome. And Chill Man is kind of cool in its own way.

I rescind my statement. Was NOT expecting this:

http://www.themmnetwork.com/2010/03/17/ … ek-at-ost/

Ippo Yamada said that each stage theme for the robot masters was composed by someone who did work on the old games.

1 – Blade Man
2 – Pump Man
3 – Commando Man
4 – Chill Man
5 – Sheep Man
6 – Strike Man
7 – Nitro Man
8 – Solar Man

The eight composers who worked on these songs are as follows:

A – Manami Matsumae (Mega Man, 2)
B – Yasuaki Fujita (Mega Man 3, 4)
C – Minae Fujii (Mega Man 4)
D – Mari Yamaguchi (Mega Man 5)
E – Yuko Takehara (Mega Man 6, 7)
F – Makoto Tomozawa (Mega Man 7)
G – Shusaku Uchiyama (Mega Man 8 )
H – Akari Kaida (Mega Man & Bass)

Not in that order, obviously, but do we have any guesses (updated now) for the composers? It'll be revealed on March 22nd, supposedly.

A lot of your guesses Sonic would still be valid.

the_miker Mar 23, 2010

Here's the official breakdown, copied from the VGMdb page:

09. KING OF BLADES (BLADE MAN STAGE)
Music by Akari Kaida

10. POLLUTED PUMP (PUMP MAN STAGE)
Music by Yuko Takehara

11. DESERT COMMANDO (COMMANDO MAN STAGE)
Music by Minae Ojalin Fujii

12. ABSOLUTE CHILL (CHILL MAN STAGE)
Music by Shusaku Uchiyama

13. CYBERSHEEP'S DREAM (SHEEP MAN STAGE)
Music by Mari Yamaguchi

14. FIREBALL STRIKE (STRIKE MAN STAGE)
Music by Makoto Tomozawa

15. NITRO RIDER (NITRO MAN STAGE)
Music by Manami Matsumae

16. SOLAR INFERNO (SOLAR MAN STAGE)
Music by Yasuaki Bunbun Fujita

-----------

Awesome!  My favorite tracks were done by my favorite composers of the group.. Uchiyama, Matsumae, Bunbun, and Tomozawa!  What are the odds? tongue

SonicPanda Mar 23, 2010

1 out of 8. Way to make me look bad, Capcom.

I hope the rest of the tracks get broken down eventually.

the_miker Mar 24, 2010

From best to worst, here is my final (pretty sure) ranking of the stage themes:

Chill Man
Solar Man
Strike Man
Nitro Man
Sheep Man
Commando Man
Pump Man
Blade Man

Chill and Solar are definitely on top (omg hot and cold). Blade and Pump are definitely on the bottom.  It's just those middle four that could get shuffled around, but I doubt it unless my ears are currently deceiving me.  Oh and as for the Wily stages, Wily 2 all the freaking way.

I'm guessing the OST will hold the answer.
It'll be released tomorrow, and I have it on preorder (I NEED that Inti bonus CD!) so all will be revealed soon wink

Razakin Mar 24, 2010

After one listen, I'd say the 8 boss stage themes are probably the weakest link on the soundtrack, except for the awesome Solar Man stage. Which is kinda odd for a Rockman ost.

Daniel K Mar 27, 2010

Man, I don't want to spread negativity or dis fans of this soundtrack, but I have to say that the MM10 OST is - by a very large margin - my least favourite soundtrack in the classic Mega Man series. Just about the only tracks I can stomach are Nitro Man's and Solar Man's stage themes, and a couple of the Dr. Wily stage themes. The rest just leave me cold (and even the few I do like are merely passable, hardly stand-out material). This isn't even on the same planet as the MM9 OST or the six classic NES scores.

Seriously, Blade Man's stage theme is by far the worst I've heard in the classic MM series.

I'm hearin' you here. I've tried to give this OST a nice chance, but it's all around disappointing at best. To me, this isn't just a lackluster Megaman soundtrack, it's just wholesomely bad on it's own merits.

I will say this, though. I wasn't able to appreciate the Megaman 9 OST to it's fullest until I listened to the accompanying Arrange album, which I surely, truly and absolutely adored. It just brought forth so many layers to the music that I didn't notice before, so I'm hoping the inevitable Megaman 10 Arrange album does the same for me.

Angela Mar 27, 2010 (edited Mar 27, 2010)

I usually don't take to doing stage-by-stage rankings of Mega Man music, but with MM10, I have a truly definable sense of what I like and don't.  So, from best to worst:

DESERT COMMANDO (COMMANDO MAN STAGE) - Minae Ojalin Fujii
SOLAR INFERNO (SOLAR MAN STAGE) - Yasuaki Bunbun Fujita
POLLUTED PUMP (PUMP MAN STAGE) - Yuko Takehara
NITRO RIDER (NITRO MAN STAGE) - Manami Matsumae
FIREBALL STRIKE (STRIKE MAN STAGE) - Makoto Tomozawa
KING OF BLADES (BLADE MAN STAGE) - Akari Kaida
ABSOLUTE CHILL (CHILL MAN STAGE) - Shusaku Uchiyama
CYBERSHEEP'S DREAM (SHEEP MAN STAGE) - Mari Yamaguchi

I'll also say that 10 features the most consistently finest set of Wily Stage themes I've heard in the series, with each successive theme being as good, if not better than the last.  ABANDONED MEMORY (Wily 1) and NO TURNING BACK (Wily 3) are particularly high on the awesometer.

Plus, the last level intro that plays up in DR. WILY CASTLE -FINAL- may end up being the coolest thing I'll see and hear this year. wink

Those are my 2 favorites too (although the other way round) and this just goes to show that Ojalin and Bunbun are THE unslain masters of MM music.

I also agree with DK that this is one of the tamest soundtracks in the series, even though I still like it.

SonicPanda Mar 27, 2010

Based on responses here and elsewhere, I have to assume the general consensus is that Capcom's getting-the-band-back-together stunt for the first eight stages was something of a failure.
In retrospect it makes sense, since everyone has a different idea of which soundtracks in the series are the best ones (outside of the near-universal appreciation for 2 & 3, which were worked on by the composers of the two most-appreciated of these tracks internet-wide, Nitroman's and Solarman's), and with only one track to work with, you might not even get the style from each composer you like (certainly true of Takehara's contribution in my case, I love MM6's music in general, but she made one or two snoozers, and I personally think Pumpman makes three).
When they do get around to another Classic game (hopefully after they make a third ZX game), maybe Inti should just go back to handling it themselves, as the Wily stage themes are generally more well-liked, and for god's sake get Masaki Suzuki and Chicken Mob back in the mix - they were the best composers in their stable before Kawakami showed up.

P.S. Daniel, Blademan is seriously worse than Burnerman or Astroman from Megaman & Bass? I could understand if you forgot about that lump of a  soundtrack altogether, though - Dynamoman's theme is the only one I actually keep on my mp3 player.

Yeah, I did forget that one. I was thinking of the numbered ones (1 - 10).

Oh yeah, also: Chill Man's stage theme is quite good.

Yeah, I feel it was more of a failure than a success.

Mega Man & Bass' "Big Four" for me: Cold Man, Pirate Man, Boss, King Man Stage

Nick G Mar 28, 2010

No one has mentioned this?!!

http://www.zophar.net/music/nsf/rockman … 3-360.html

He also made an NSF for Mega Man 9 which was interesting to check out. I should have known that the NES sound hardware couldn't do that beat slicing effect on "Maze of Death".

yona Apr 1, 2010 (edited Apr 1, 2010)

Surprisingly, I find the arranges on the Inti Bonus Disc Volume 1 that come with the OST more enjoyable than the actual soundtrack.

Megadeth Apr 7, 2010

sorry to say but I prefer megaman 9 ost by miles
I dont know whether the melody lines on this one is less catchy or what but its not memorable like 9, at least for me

That seems to be the general consensus, yes.

I will admit 10 has really grown on me the past couple of weeks, I love it now, but it's still not as memorable as 9, certainly.

Megadeth Apr 7, 2010

after listening to the entire ost like 10 times, only strike man's theme that stuck in my head, the other is rather disapointing ... like chill man's theme for example... kinda sounds like an out of tune melody

megaman 9 opening is something that really catch the vintage sound
and Splash women stage is still my ringtone big_smile

yea,  1-2 bars of same melody is enough to make it stuck in my head big_smile

It's interesting how much better the Wily Stage themes are. The Robot Stage themes mostly feel phoned in (with a few exceptions).

Definitely agreed. The Wily stage themes save this soundtrack from being almost completely forgettable. All of them are great, with Wily 4 and Wily 5 leading the pack, in my opinion.
