it does look fun, but see for yourself:

what do think? my last sonic game was sonic unleashed. it was bearable-good, nothing more.

That's actually a fantastic idea they've come up with.  Seems like it'd be hard to implement throughout an entire game but I'd love to see it work.

There has been a vicious cycle to Sonic games ever since the series went 3D. Each time a new game is hyped, it starts to seem like maybe, just maybe Sonic Team has learned from their previous mistakes. Maybe a Sonic game will be fun again.

...and then I vow never to fall victim to another Sonic game again.

VERY excited about this game after playing Colors, which was possibly my favorite post-Genesis Sonic game ever.  They've acknowledged he wasn't springy or fast enough in Sonic 4 and it sounds like they're fixing that for retro Sonic in this game.  And from what I can tell, the 3D gameplay looks just as fast and intense as Sonic Colors, which is a very very good thing.  It's also comforting to know Sonic Generations' producer is Takashi Iizuka. He also produced/directed Sonic 3 & Knuckles, NiGHTS, Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, and Sonic Colors.

Check THIS video out:

Hear that?  Green Hill Zone, original Genesis version with a few extra beats, plays for retro Sonic and an all-new remix plays when you're modern Sonic!!  Since this whole game will feature levels from all the previous games, I'm guessing more Masato Nakamura (Sonic 1-2) and "Michael Jackson" (Sonic 3) music will be used.  I wonder if that means they can finally release a soundtrack box set?

It looks like the modern Sonic sections will feature more of the same semi-interactive roller-coaster nonsense that Sega has been churning out for more than a decade:

Though the skinnier, younger version of Sonic embraces speed and various camera angles (giving the impression of a deeper, more involved game), his version of Green Hill Zone felt more like an on-rails pinball machine. Skinny Sonic was tossed mercilessly around the stage with little inspiration from the Xbox controller, reminding me why I haven't been inclined towards Sonic titles in recent years. A handful of QTEs and scripted encounters helped to make this mode feel "bigger," but the actual interaction seemed distinctly scaled back to allow for cinematic events. It's a rather noticeable difference when played back-to-back with older Sonic's version of the same level, as intended. … s-preview/

No one else finds this deeply discouraging?

Still haven't played Colors, although it's supposedly pretty good.
I'm not too fond of the "new" style of Sonic though. Too much emphasis on just speed and flashy imagery, and too little on actual platforming.

What I liked most about the old Sonic games was to just explore and find all the different paths through a level. I'd almost even say it's the moments where Sonic does NOT run like crazy that were the best.

Let's hope they capture that classic feel with the "older" versions of the stages.

why is that the higher the resolution of a Sonic sidescroller, the less seems to actually be shown on screen at any one time?

Sonic Colors is decent, though not the greatest. Some of the platforming sections are REALLY slow, if not grating at times (read: Death pits filling the entire bottom of the screen). A lot of the speed sections are just for show - overglorified cut scenes that you don't even actually control - but there are some stretches that you can treat like a race track, which eventually come to a grinding halt at certain points in the middle, before letting you continue on your merry way again.

The backgrounds in the levels are really detailed - which is admirable - but there's just so much, and you're moving so fast, you don't have any time to take it in, especially when you dodging obstacles, traps, and enemies.

I'll probably play through the whole game, try grabbing some of the game's secrets - but I probably won't be keeping the game long term.
