Yea, a film I can review first for once. I saw the new animation by Studio Ghibli tonight and I actually came away the most satisfied from any Ghibli film of the past ten years.
The story is set in '60s era Yokohama and revolves around the high school and household lives of two students Umi and Shun who both have complicated family histories and develop a relationship with each other. It's a fairly simple story and that's partly what I liked about it; though there's a certain amount of depth to it as well it comes to a clear and satisfying resolution without becoming completely bizarre like so many recent Ghibli movies.
As someone who has experienced both life in the Tokyo-Yokohama area and in the Japanese school system I'll admit I'm biased towards the charming, retro'fied depictions of both, as well as towards the overall bittersweet quality of the story. The retro quality applies to the aesthetics also; without any particularly astounding moments in either the animation or the score the film could just as easily pass for one of the studio's earlier works, but in this case I wouldn't say that's a bad thing.
I'm not sure how much of the movie's appeal will carry over to a non-Japanified foreign audience but for me it was a refreshingly uncynical and simple delight of a film.
