Truly a sad day for film fans in general.
Truly a sad day for film fans in general.
The news is certainly saddening and sounds like the end of an era if it's ever real (I remember he said the same thing after Mononoke or Ponyo), but I personally don't miss him since I've not really terribly impressed by his works in the decade or more. Kaze Tachinu and Mononoke were decent, Ponyo was okay, but Spirited Away and Howl were... terrible. As his son who was initially called as a hack has made a passable work like From Up On Poppy Hill, I think Miyazaki realized he's exhausted his creativity and decide to yield the position to the son or somebody else. Great directer, for certain.
i'm sure disney will be along to buy all the rights
Perhaps now in retirement he will consider visiting the US for purposes of conventions. People coming just to see him would be unprecedented I think.
So this is the... is it fourth(?) time that he's said he's going to retire? The first was after Mononoke, as I recall.
but Spirited Away and Howl were... terrible. .
Howl maybe, but Spirited Away? But I don't I think that but why and how WHAT.
The man is 72 years old, he deserves his retirement.
I've enjoyed all his films I've seen, even if the endings for his recent ones tend to get a bit bizarre. Spirited Away was difficult to follow on first viewing (especially sans subtitles) but I was really impressed the second time. Still would love to see Howl's Moving Castle again also (fantastic score btw, especially its image album which comprises many of the best tracks in Studio Ghibli Symphonic Collection). Still really must check Laputa and Kiki's Delivery Service off my list, and am looking forward to his new and apparently final film The Wind Rises.
It's impossible not to like Spirited Away, wtf.
Makoto Shinkai is the new Miyazaki, at least for me.
sucks, but he gave us enough already. what are the future plans for ghibli?
i haven't watched his more recent films. maybe i should.

Presumably a new generation will take over. I really really liked Arrietty, and while certainly not my favorite Ghibli Film, Poppy Hill was much, much better than Goro Miyazaki's first film, Tales from Earthsea...

I feel the opposite. I liked From Up on Poppy Hill but did not really like Arrietty that much. I think everyone, Goro Miyazaki included, was disappointed with Tales from Earthsea
