Some pretty promising - albeit none too surprising - offerings from Capcom for G-Day.  Getting Phoenix Wright 3 (and as early as September, no less) is about one of the best things that's ever going to happen this year.   Looks like there's strong Wii support on the way with Project Treasure Island Z, Resident Evil 4, and Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles.   I'd be interested to see the HD-resolution remakes of Super SF2 Turbo and Super Puzzle Fighter just for the new Udon Comics-based artwork and graphics, and the fusion of PW adventure-style gameplay with the Harvey Birdman license is ripe with intrigue.

Check out Kohler's lowdown on the event's games here:

Not that it's terribly important, but what the heck is "Gamer's Day"?
Is that Capcom's answer to the Square Enix Party 2007?

Do all the publishers want to try and throw their own shindig now that E3 isn't around?

E3 is still around: http://www.e3expo.com/

Heh, a Phoenix Wright game starring Harvey Birdman for the PS2 and PSP.  Hm... tempting some.  If priced right, I may get it; I'm not a fan of Phoenix Wright, although the game was a bit fun, but I am of Harvey Birdman.  I'm curious, other than voice acting and FMV, why they would need it on a console.

The Wii-controls for Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, with a fair price point, makes that almost definite.

Glad to know the House of the Resident Evil Dead (Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles) is fun; a real light gun game to follow-up on Wii Play sounds like a good thing.  I'm really interested in this.

I don't know if I want Project Treasure Island Z; I never tried the Monkey Island games, but this one's description intrigues me.

The best news of all is the XBLA (or PS3, but I'll most likely get it on XBLA) Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo in high-def with animation better than the Guilty Gear games.  I'm not sure what Udon artwork is like, especially for this super-deformed look.  Being a remake, I'm curious if they'll add new characters, stages, and unlockables to the game.  At the least I hope it has the various modes that are in the DC and PSP releases.  I'm assuming Super Street Fighter II Turbo will just be a much better looking SSF2T without anything added.  Right now, there is a good chance I'd get that too.

I'd like to see Capcom give other retro games the HD remake treatment if these two work out, like Street Fighter 3: Third Strike or the entire Alpha series.  Heck, I'd buy any of the Marvel fighters prior to Marvel vs Capcom without any changes being made.

Well, GAF says that SPF2THDR (Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix) will have two new stages (one from Alpha, the other from SF3) and the other modes of play from the DC/PSP versions.  I'm not sure why it claims 'new art style'... looks the same to me.

The gems are the only thing that look reworked to me. Everything else looks like it's being run under a graphics filter that your common arcade emulator has... hardly "HD." The artwork looks like they took the original artwork run through a few Photoshop filters. Pretty underwhelming if not disappointing... I knew it was wise to not get excited.

EDIT: Well, to be fair, the background look reworked... but the main attraction is the sprites, and, well... yeah.

Those can't possibly be indicative of the final version, right? The concept art they have for the HD Street Fighter 2 port looks much better, so maybe Udon haven't gotten to work on the sprites yet for either game. At least, I hope that's the case, because those filtered sprites look worse than the pixelated originals.

Those HD Super Turbo sprites would be an answered prayer... but it just seems too good to be true, and I don't have enough faith in Capcom to deliver on this lofty promise. If they do indeed produce what they've proposed, I'll be both thrilled and surprised; if they don't, my hopes won't be dashed because I won't allow them to be raised in the first place.

Megaman ZX Advent
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition

All signs that Capcom loves me and wants me to be happy.

XLord007 Apr 15, 2007

For SPF2THD, the art in the movies looks same as always to me, but they've changed the look of the gems and the animations when the gems burst is new.  The music is the same, at least in this build.

I'm gonna have to second that, but I hope they add some sort of sensitivity selector.  Whoever was playing in the video on IGN was winging that cursor every which way.

Gamer's Day appears to be self-imposed events brought together by a select few companies and developers, for the purpose of announcing and promoting new wares.  There doesn't seem to be any yearly set dates for any one of these, either; Konami had theirs in February, for instance, while Sony's was back in October.

Konami also throws another similar event, in the form of the Konami BBQ; a yearly happening that takes place in the summer.

Thanks for the infos.

All these companies sure like to waste money on needless events...

My preferred way of getting announcements about new products is to see it sitting on a store shelf ready to buy, but I guess that's too subtle.

Actually, these events are hardly "needless" nor are the companies wasting money.  They are far more cost-effective than big shows like E3.  Basically, Company X's Gamer's Day allows the company to bring together important members of the gaming press to talk exclusively about its products in a controlled environment.  Notice how the last few days were dominated by Capcom news?  If this was E3, would stories about Harvey Birdman and Treasure Island Z make headlines?  I doubt it.

Carl Apr 16, 2007

The negative image in my mind is that it's more about schmoozing than the actual products, to impress and kiss-up to media to get better reviews, but that could be an incorrect assumption.

Ryu Apr 16, 2007

That's a possibility, Carl, but I do notice that the gaming media have no problem talking up a game, even a game they've frequently had hands-on experience with, only to turn around and give it a much lower score than what they hyped it up to be.  The hyping alone seems to be enough publicity that pleases the publishers because it apparently still generates sales.

Stephen Apr 16, 2007

Not everybody gets their information directly from store shelves.  There are still readers who get their gaming news from the media, big and small.  The game company hopes that by disseminating the information in a concentrated media event, the public can get interested in their products ("hype").  These days, the better product does not always sell the best.  A lot of times, it's about how much marketing was done.
