Gamespy has a full report on last night's event.  To hit the highpoints:

Capcom's efforts will "be spearheaded by its next-generation lineup, as well as a diversification effort, bringing established flagship brands to new platforms."  The article seems to hint at specified interest in the 360; the already-announced Dead Rising and Lost Planet are leading the pack.

The Monster Hunter series is being planned for the PSP, with "Monster Hunter Freedom" coming out second quarter in the US.   The game will include four player support, as well as a two-player treasure hunt mode.

Clover Studios' Atsushi Inaba describes the upcoming "Okami" as being "based around an action shell, with adventure and role-playing elements" and that "we added an adventure aspect to the game, as well as a deep story, to make it a full experience."

Producer Hironobu Takeshita announced a revival of the Ghouls 'N Ghosts franchise, "Ultimate Ghosts 'N Goblins" for the PSP.  The new game will be like the original titles "in spirit," but will also include new gameplay elements not seen in the previous installments.  Optional save points and a continuation system will help ease the game's challenging nature.

Takeshita also announced the "Power Stone Collection," a PSP compilation of Power Stones 1 and 2.  Extras will be added to the collection, including four-player wireless multiplay, and support for four-players with just a single UMD.

The rest of the PSP lineup includes Capcom Puzzle World, a compilation of classic brain-ticklers, as well as Super Puzzle Fighter 2, Block Block, Buster Bros. Collection, Capcom Classics Collection: Remixed, Mega Man: Powered Up, and Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble.

"Street Fighter Alpha Anthology" is set for a second quarter release, so we may see it as early as June.  Again, the compilation will include arcade-faithful ports of Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Street Fighter Alpha 2: Gold, and Street Fighter Alpha 3.   As an added bonus, Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix, aka Pocket Fighter, will be thrown into the mix.

"Street Fighter 2: Hyper Fighting" is still on target for Xbox Live Arcade.  "The game will be available for download to Xbox Live users, and will include "quarter matches", an attempt at recreating the arcade experience. Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting will also provide stat tracking, leaderboards, and achievements."

The original "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney" will be heading to mobile phones, via Capcom Mobile.  In addition, it's been confirmed that Gyakuten Saiban 2 and 3 are being localized, and the cases will be available to download on a monthly basis; no word on GBA/DS releases.  "Super Puzzle Fighter 2" will also be available for download.

What, no Megaman? This might quite possibly be a Capcom first...

None of this really inteests me except to scream in protest about how they're wussifying Ghosts 'N Goblins. Come on, guys! The difficulty was the selling point for the first two!

GoldfishX Feb 17, 2006

Wonder why Capcom is so ga-ga for the PSP...Interesting how they're really going for that system (maybe they figured out that outdated ports of their classic games are better than 95% of PSP games out? Nah...). Too bad I already own most of what they're bringing out for it.

Hyper Fighting on Live...Um, why? There's already Street Fighter Anniversary online. Street Fighter Alpha Collection and Puzzle Fighter are the ones that need the online treatment (and probably HAVE needed it for the last 10 years). And Power Stone on Live could work as well, considering it would be a port of games from the same generation (early Dreamcast games ported to late Xbox).

Mixed reactions...No new fighting game announcements and (as mentioned) no new Megaman announcements. Possibility of GBA Phoenix Wright and new Ghouls and Ghosts sound promising. I can take it or leave it overall.

Capcom's support of the PSP is stupid.  Still isn't enough to sell me on that garbage.

lollllllllllllllllllllll

Also, why are you guys asking about Megaman news? Irregular Hunter X2 is pretty much confirmed, Powered Up! is still on it's way to the US (as is EXE 6, right?), and ZX is currently in the works.

Anyways, where did you see that GS 2 and 3 are being localized?

Where did you see anything that mentions localized versions of cases from GS2 and/or GS3?  The GameSpy article you linked only mentions that cases will be released individually and that it's possible that more cases will be made available than were in the DS game.

Also watch for a demo of Okami in an upcoming issue of OPM.  I loved the last demo I played, and I can't wait to check it out again.

If they don't release these on anything other than cellphones, then I'll lose all respect for Capcom of America. I'd sooner eat live bugs than buy a cellphone, and in any case, I've yet to see a cellphone screen large enough to see anything on. Up yours, Capcom.

Power Stone on PSP? Fantastic news. It's about time those games got life beyond the DC. I think this is good news all round.

A Powerstone Collection would be great... if it wasn't only on a portable.

I have, but they're all Japanese.  Heck, the phone I use has a screen that's more than twice the size of the GB Micro's.  But I would still NEVER want to play a game on my cell phone.  The actual portable gaming systems are far, far better designed for playing games.  If it's true that Capcom's localizing them, they'd better show up on GBA or DS.

Well they are aleady out on a non-portable system which, oddly enough, still seems to have some releases coming up long after it was supposed to be dead. Thing is, if it does well even slightly on PSP, you can be sure they'll bring it to the larger consoles - Powerstone on Live would be excellent (not that I have Live)...

Why, it's on page four, just near the......uh.... oh wait, it doesn't exactly specify that, does it?  o_O  In any case, it's fairly common knowledge at this point that the games will be coming over:

GA reports on Capcom Mobile's plans

One figures that eighteen cases -- assuming that case five from the DS version of Phoenix Wright is omitted, and that GS4 is also planned for mobile release -- will equate to:

PW:AA = 4 cases
GS2 = 4 cases
GS3 = 5 cases
GS4 = 5 cases

At the very least, even if we don't see GBA/DS releases, this should be a real boon for the rom/rom-translating community.  It'd likely make Broco's project go that much smoother.

Well, that does make sense, but it's such a shame for Capcom to go through the effort of translating them just for cell phones.  The gamer in me will be very sad if they don't make it here on an actual game machine.  That said, from a business standpoint, Phoenix Wright does make a lot more sense as a cell phone game, assuming you can hook enough people to keep them paying for additional cases.

I'm surprised Capcom is bringing this series back given how much of a gigantic flop Power Stone 2 was.

I took a look at the pix of the PSP Puzzle Fighter on Magic Box and Capcom has clearly gotten lazy again: squashed sprites abound for a "stretch to fit" experience.  Would it really have been so hard to actually make the game to fit the PSP's aspect ratio properly?  I guess this laziness pretty much dooms any hope of an online (or as Sony likes to call it, "infrastructure") mode.

Jay Feb 19, 2006 (edited Feb 19, 2006)

Yep, you're absolutely right - the screenshots in that look badly stretched. I guess there'll still be a 4:3 mode but still, it wouldn't hurt to optimise them for widescreen.

True, but only on Dreamcast and I think Powerstone 2 is a rarity here in the US.  Plus, the addition of extras and online make the collection worth complaining to have out on console.

New development concerning Phoenix Wright mobile.  Justin Davis of Modojo interviewed Midori Yuasa, and he had this to say on the GA forums - and I quote:

As a big Phoenix Wright fan I hit her pretty hard for info, expecting not to get much, but she was actually pretty chatty about it. Wouldn't give any details of new cases, though :( Here's some cliffnotes:

-The cases will be NEW. Exclusive to the mobile platform. I suppose I *could* have misunderstood her, but my understanding, and I'm 99% certain, is that these aren't translated scenarios from the JP-only PW2 and PW3.

-If the game does well they'll support it for a long time. She said there could be a new case a month for over a year, if demand is there.

-On some carriers you'll be able to choose from a menu of all the avail. cases. So the PW mobile game just sorta acts like a "player" that different episodes can be inserted into. Microtransaction-style.

Here's the original article:

Man, Capcom should have just boiled it down to  "f--- you guys! Seriously!"

Qui-Gon Joe Mar 3, 2006

I'm torn.  On one hand, if I hope that no one downloads these games, Capcom will think "no one wants to play Phoenix Wright and not bring any more to the states (much like when Sega was like "Guess there aren't any fans of Panzer Dragoon or Shenmue!" after they put those series onto a system whose userbase couldn't care less).  On the other hand, if I hope that the games do really well and Capcom decides to bring over the GBA/DS ones to milk more money from the franchise, there's the risk that they'll just be like "we don't need to have versions on game systems... people are content to deal with playing them on shitty cell phones!"

I hate and love Capcom in the way Gollum hates and loves the ring.  Ugh.

Agreed!  You have to really wonder, who the hell comes up with these retarded decisions???

Capcom exec#1: Looks like the DS Phoenix Wright has sold out in the US.

Capcom exec#2: In that case, let's move all our upcoming games to the PSP and release a new Pheonix Wright on the cell phone!

Capcom exec#1: Great idea!  That'll teach those meddling Americans not to buy our games!

Capcom exec#1 and #2: (evil laugh) Hahahahahaha!
