Dang man, that's $187 right there! I haven't even put in half that.

True, but that's small change compared to how much you would have spent to purchase the games when they first came out!

And since I no longer have those games and systems (only 6 of them I haven't played before), I've had the Wii since launch, and not much has came out new worth getting (Gamefly saves me a bundle there), it averages less than $30 a month.

Angela Feb 8, 2008

Didn't know whether to post in this topic thread or this one.  But I've finally, finally got my Wii online, and I straight away hit the Wii Shop.  I instantly blew 6,800 points on the following:

Super Mario 64
Starfox 64
Mario Kart 64
Paper Mario
Sin & Punishment
Air Zonk
Super Air Zonk
Gate of Thunder

Speaking of Gate of Thunder, is Lords of Thunder hitting Wii channels outside of Europe anytime soon?  I want it.  Bad. :)

YES! This month apparently. I can't wait. I will actually hook up my Wii to wireless for a change, for this alone. smile

That's one of the few US Duo games that I never picked up, so I'm DEFINITELY plunking down for this on Monday!  Oh 16 bit era Hudson, how I love you.

LORDS OF THUNDER (it deserves to always be in caps) is one of the best shooters ever made, and not so coincidentally, has one of the best soundtracks ever. Shame with VC you can't rip the redbook audio... sad

GoldfishX Feb 8, 2008

Lords was/is one of the reasons I picked up a Turbo Duo. It really does have everything I'd look for in the perfect shooter. Glad to see it reaching a much larger audience (hopefully). I do have and enjoy Gate, but Lords is just...whoa!

Maybe Duo Cotton and Sapphire are next on the horizon... \m/

Bleh, I'm really not sure I trust Hudson to try emulating the arcade card for Sapphire since they haven't even gotten the resolution correct for regular games.  :\

Ryu Feb 9, 2008

Bleh, I wish they'd release something I'd want for a change.  And all these systems supported so they release just ONE or TWO a week?

Idolores Feb 9, 2008

Okay! I've only done so for the Wii, so here goes!

Super Metroid (SNES): Must've played through this game a dozen times or more trying to unlock the damn best ending, with Samus decked out all skimpy like. The atmosphere, music, and gameplay remain in my mind the best that the SNES had to offer, which makes it a runner for a top 10 list in the future, should I ever compile one.

TMNT (NES): Honestly thought it wasn't as bad as Angry Video Game Nerd would have you believe, although there is a great deal of the game that was really poorly thought out, such as level design, or enemy placement.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Genesis): Only downloaded it because I remember the music being really awesome. Gameplay has held up to standards in my opinion, but I rarely go back to it for whatever reason.

Streets of Rage (Genesis): Yuzo Koshiro's excellent score aside, this game has aged really badly. Gameplay is not as fast as I remember it being, also being more shallow too. My memories of this game are far more awesome than the game itself.

Starfox 64 (N64): Probably one of my most loved titles for the N64. Downloaded it to try and get the medals on each planet, but have thus far only succeeded in acquiring the one for Corneria. Loved the music, too.

Paper Mario (N64): Downloaded this for the missus. She plays it more than I do, and as much as I adored the Gamecube and Wii iterations of the series, I doubt I'll ever actually see this one through to the end.

As for what I want? Ocarina of Time, mostly. If they ever get around to doing the NES Megamans, sure, why not? I just really want the SNES RPG's I remember fondly, like (Insert any Squaresoft game here), or Earthbound, or Breath of Fire (with redone translations, if possible, for God's sake), you know. What have you.

^ Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy the Mega Man Collection and Mega Man X Collection for Gamecube (since they'll play on the Wii) instead of getting them on the Virtual Console?

Totally agreed! The collections are near perfect too! Except for MM7, which had to have the ending cut out (pity), I really fail to see how people can not love these collections. Seriously, you get 8 complete (well 7, if you take out MM7) games, and 2 bonus games, and bonuses!! Just wait until these become OOP, people will pay top dollars for them down the road...

Err... I thought Ocarina of Time was up for the VC in all regions?  Personally I'm still waiting on Majora's Mask (and Pilotwings 64.  And Beetle Adventure Racing.  ...pretty much I want all my N64 games rereleased so I can play them at a decent resolution).

Yeah, both you and Ryu are right. Why blow money like that when for maybe $15 I can snag Anniversary Collections?

Should've specified. It's the one I want most next, like the one I will most likely buy next, as opposed to most of the other ones I mentioned that haven't even made it to VC. Sorry for sounding vague. tongue

Definitely looking forward to Majora's Mask, Tetrisphere, and - gotta have more Treasure - Mischief Makers (plus Bangai-Oh was an N64 game in Japan?).  I feel masochistic enough to give the N64 Castlevania another try (and its sequel a first try).  I guess Rare will put the Banjo-Kazooie games on the XBLA, so I think that pretty much wraps up the N64 games that I'm waiting for release on VC.

Personally I'd like to see Blast Corps released, I loved that game but never bought a copy. Dunno if that would happen since it was a Rareware game (does Rare still retain the rights to games it developed for Nintendo?).

Let's not forget that the Cube version of MMAC has the borked controls where you have to use B to jump.

I have Ogre Battle 64 complete with box, instructions. I played it maybe twice after realizing it wasn't my kind of game. I must've purchased it a few months after it released and it's been closeted ever since. I'd be willing to sell it, but not at a thrifty VC price...

csK Feb 11, 2008

This is off topic, but I can't help it as I'm very curious!  I've read that the N64 games on the VC are now in much higher resolution then the native N64.  And I'm wondering... is that a good thing?  I've read that Star Fox 64 and F-ZERO X look worse now then before, with odd colouring and graphic glitches.  But I haven't seen anything myself... obviously lack of a Wii to compare makes it a bit hard!  So I'm wondering for those who have played both N64 and Wii VC, is there a difference and if so, is it a good one?

While I think Mario 64 looks pretty much the same as I remember it, I find Mario Kart 64 to be a HUGE improvement over the original.  I can actually tell that the question mark blocks are question mark blocks!  Basically all of the 3D polygon graphics look much sharper and lose a lot of the blur that the games had on their native hardware.  However, any 2D sprites (ex: shells in Mario Kart) or prerendered backgrounds (ex: outside the Temple of Time in Zelda: OoT) look a little bit weird and fuzzy because they couldn't accordingly bump up those resolutions.  Personally despite any little quirks, I find the virtual console versions a lot easier on the eyes these days.  I hope people who avoided N64 games because of graphics back in the day try out some of these classics.

You only say that because you're used to the original controls. Trust me, B for jump is not a big deal after after you play for a little bit. For the record, I loved Mega Man on the NES, so it's not like I haven't played the originals. I do agree, it would have been really nice of them to let you assign controls to specific buttons, but still no big deal. I still claim that the Mega Man Collections are worth their weight in gold smile

My N64 has been handed down to my buddy Zane! Thus, I'm only interested in a VC version of Ogre Battle and at a thrifty VC price smile

I have no problem with the X Collections.  Those're good.  But the Atomic Planet shit-on-disc I cannot forgive, so I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. :-)

Sorry, that was just way too much for my brain to wrap around.  I tried to play the cube version - I really did, but it was still just wrong.  Ended up trading it in for the PS1 version where for some reason they didn't screw up the controls.  Granted, it's me, the person who downloaded a save game patch for FF5 when it came out on the Playstation to allow circle to be accept and X to be cancel LIKE IT STILL SHOULD BE, SCEA WHY DO YOU CHANGE IT FOR AMERICA?  Uhh... right.  Move along, nothing to see here, etc.

Angela Feb 11, 2008

Just downloaded and did a back-to-back playthrough of Lords of Thunder.  (Sorry, "LORDS OF THUNDER.")  Damn, what a ridiculously fun game; I did a Water Armor and Fire Armor Normal run, and I'm already itching to do an Earth and Wind one.  It's just too bad that the voice-overs are still cut from this version.

First thing tomorrow, though, I'm going out and buying a Classic Controller; the Gamecube pad just isn't cutting it for these types of games.  My only worry is the questionable diagonals that seem to plague a select number of Nintendo's new d-pads.  Has anyone had any problems with their CCs?

XLord007 Feb 11, 2008

Angela wrote:

The only game I've played with my Classic Controller is Sin & Punishment which doesn't really use the d-pad, so I can't comment on that.  However, I will comment on how insanely annoying it is having to have it connected to the Wiimote.  I have to try to balance the Wiimote in my lap while playing since the cord is too short to lay the Wiimote down on the floor and the Classic Controller has no way of physically attaching itself onto the Wiimote.  For a system with such elegant design, I'm really surprised Nintendo let this happen.

Qui-Gon Joe Feb 12, 2008

The classic controller has the best d-pad that Nintendo has made since... well, the SNES, I guess (the 64 one might not be bad but I don't ever remember having a chance to use it for much).  Also I just put the wii remote next to me when using the classic controller and don't really understand the problems people have with it being attached (I'd prefer it be detached, but meh, whatever).
