Wow, did this press conference completely suck.  A complete waste of an hour and a half.  The only real announcement was Microsoft's new game show controller for Scene It.  Peter Moore didn't even have a new tatoo!  At least we got a new [extremely short] RE5 trailer, though.  Shouldn't be too hard for Sony and Nintendo to top this tomorrow.

Ryu Jul 11, 2007

They did say that GTA4 will have exclusive content (additional gameplay chapters) for the 360.  Sega released two XBLA games today, which was unexpected... and not really what I wanted (which was Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix).  Also, the XBLM will have the extended RE5 trailer later this month.

I read snippets from IGN as they updated as opposed to watching it... I don't really care about these events much.  I don't even care about Nintendo's, which is a first in a long time.  The only good thing about the MS show is that when it ended they put up a Blue Dragon demo and Golden Axe for XBLA (I don't care for Sonic).

Agreed.  Props to G4 for cutting to commercial during the Halo 3 trailer.  Definitely the highlight of the evening.

I can't even tell if you're being sarcastic tongue

But anyways, no big news, and I once again get the feeling the 360 desperately needs more rpgs besides Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey. Also I'm hoping the RE5 trailer will be different for the Sony press conference.

Eternal Sonata's coming in September.
Nobody's talking about that. ;_;

Trust me, I am.  Some wise guy at XBL has the Eternal Sonata description mention a playable demo, but it's not yet available... I'm patient though.

Also, in November is Mass Effect.  These are to join Enchanted Arms and the forgettable Oblivion.  How many RPGs do you really need stacked up on your shelves with the intention of playing anyway?  = P

Well Sony showed what people wanted to see - games. The Nintendo one was particularly unimpressive except for how wonderful Galaxy looks. It really is all about waiting for Galaxy and Metroid and Metroid didn't really seem all that impressive.

That Infamous looks excellent and Wipeout HD will be worth a watch. MGS4 looked nice but very much more of the same. Interesting to see Meryl hasn't changed her hair. But then it does seem pretty tough judging by the lack of movement. The Raiden bit absolutely rocked though. Was that Vamp from 2?

Yes that's him.

Jay Jul 11, 2007

What happened to him in MGS2? I can't remember.

Ryu Jul 11, 2007

Honestly, going by reading blogs instead of wasting time watching them, all three really didn't wow me with anything impressive.  It seems to me that all three decided to take it down a notch or something?  And I don't really care about Wii Fit; what happened to Wii Music?

discoalucard Jul 11, 2007

The Eternal Sonata demo is available if you sign up for a Japanese XBL account. It's pretty easy!

XLord007 Jul 12, 2007

The GTA4 exclusives and Sega XBLA stuff were all revealed before E3, so those items weren't really new.

I couldn't watch the Sony and Nintendo conferences since they occured during the workday, but from the video clips I've been able to piece together, at least there was some interesting stuff going on.

Sony didn't show sales charts for the obvious reason that its getting its ass handed to it by Nintendo and MSFT and that's not exacty something it wants to highlight.

I'm happy that Sony finally admitted to the new PSP, even if this "redesign" is nearly identical to the original with none of the rumored onboard Flash ROM that we were hoping for.  That said, it does have a video out and it'll be released in time for Dracula X, so you can bet I'll be all over that.

I'm also pretty impressed with The Agency.  I've never been able to get into online games, but this one sounds pretty cool, assuming SOE can pull it off (and I have serious doubts about that based on their previous titles).

Assassin's Creed doesn't look like it's evolving at all which is a disappointment since it looked so promising last year.  Hopefully they've got some better stuff they're not showing us.

Too Human still looks rough; why can't Silicon Knights ever meet a deadline?

Mass Effect looks pretty cool from the trailer, but Bioware can't make clean code...

Getting to Nintendo, Wii Fit is the megaton.  This is going to bring them so much massively good press, not to mention the sales once the thing lands.  It's a pity they can't have it out in the U.S. by Christmas.  I doubt the non-gamer demographic that Nintendo wants really gives a shit about Smash Bros., though Mario Galaxy might appeal to them at least a little bit.

Mario Kart Wii looks like crap.  I'm sorry, but it reminds me of Double Dash, and that was one of the worst MK games.  Hopefully it just looks that way and will play more like the godly Mario Kart DS.  And the wheel attachment was already lame when whichever third party released it last year.  Why is the big N bringing it back?  The Zapper attachment will probably be more useful, though Kohler doesn't seem to be too taken with using it for Umbrella Chronicles (though that could simply be because UC's sensitivity is still insane -- watch any video and see those cursors jiggle like crazy!)

Professor Layton is heading stateside this year, and that's lovely news.  More sweet adventuring on DS!

Finally, the much anticipated MGS4 trailer...  how do I put this?  I absolutely adored the first couple MGS4 trailers.  They made me want the game very badly.  This trailer turns me off since it reminds me of how absurd the MGS2 stuff was.  I am so not interested in seeing Vamp/Raiden drama, and I don't care much about Liquid.  Sigh... I was really hoping they'd keep that stuff to a minimum and focus on the much cooler new stuff they talked about in the original trailers.  At least it still looks beautiful.

Ryu Jul 12, 2007

The ridiculously silent announcement of Advance Wars DS 2 is the megaton of the whole show for me.  And I've not even seen a screenshot yet...

Yep, you're right. But, as an actual gamer, Nintendo making a mint from the non-gamer doesn't mean a damn to me. I was hoping for some, you know, games.

The PSP redesign is unbelievably shit and shows a serious lack of understanding from Sony. The hideous non-working d-pad is still intact, terrible shoulder buttons and, aside from battery life (did they even say how much improved it was), none of the actual problems of the system have been sorted.

Advance Wars DS 2?!?  When?! WHEN!?

Ugh. All they did was give the video output higher quality and made the system 33% lighter? Awesome.

Metroid, Smash Bros., Mario Galaxy, and the new Mario Kart aren't enough for you?  And that's just what Nintendo showed... there's still stuff like Kirby, Animal Crossing, Disaster, Battaltion Wars 2, and all the third party stuff coming down the pipe as well.

If you meant actual new stuff, then yeah, Nintendo didn't show anything new other than Mario Kart and WiiFit, but that's one each for non-games and real games, so it's even.

I read a preview of the device that stated that the d-pad on the new one is a lot better than the old d-pad.

I'm not trying to defend Sony or anything, but the unit also has a longer battery life and the video output is all-new.  There was never a video out on the original PSP.

The PSP redesign will be available in September in Piano Black and Ice Silver. A PSP Entertainment Pack will include the Ice Silver version, Daxter, the UMD Family Guy collection, a 1GB memory stick, and will put gamers back $199.

You know, that's not bad at all...It'll be SOME improved over the current model at the very least (good lord, does it need it...I hear the loading is supposedly shorter and the battery life is supposedly longer...supposedly) and I get Family Guy on UMD, a stick I'll have to buy anyway and a highly-rated game that doesn't look bad, but I wouldn't pay money for. I can't think of a way for them to make that deal any sweeter (save for a price drop or a larger stick or something).

Other than that, I couldn't care less about any of the E3 news I've heard. PS3's pathetic, no reason to look up Wii until December (at least) and nothing to make me run out and buy a 360.

Metroid Prime 3 - august
Super Mario Galaxy - november
Super Smash Brawl - december
there.

Was that the one on Kotaku that also mentioned it has a new DS Lite gloss finish (that the PSP always had)? If so, I'll believe it when I actually play it. The design is the same so even if it's tweaked, they're just polishing a turd.

GoldfishX Jul 13, 2007

I know...I've said all along I'll buy the system when they release Smash Brothers Brawl. I'm only casually interested in Mario and Metroid Prime 3. Fire Emblem (Wii) is also a good push in the direction though.

Jay Jul 13, 2007

I can't imagine how anyone could only be casually interested in Mario Galaxy after seeing the trailer. It blew me away. Visually lovely of course but the gameplay seemed like perfect Nintendo platforming goodness.

PSP Video out? So does that mean that the PSP will be able to connect to your TV or indirectly to your TV through a PS3??

cheers,

PSP connects straight to the television.

Mario Sunshine. I bought a Gamecube for that game and regretted it. I'll probably get (or rent) Galaxy, but not until after I get the Wii and put a good 40 hours or so into Brawl.

Jay Jul 13, 2007

I feel your Sunshine pain but this looks much improved. We won't know for sure until release of course but it looks positive to me.

If you buy the respective cable, that is. Seems like they won't pack it in by default.

Qui-Gon Joe Jul 13, 2007

Just want to pop in on that conversation of Mario Sunshine/Galaxy and throw in my two cents.  I've recently replayed all of Super Mario 64, a bit of Mario Sunshine, and am watching someone play through all of Wind Waker.  Now that a few years have gone by, here's how I feel:

Mario 64 - Still brilliant.  Yeah the controls are more awkward than Sunshine, but the level design is SO MUCH BETTER.  Each star is unique and interesting and the collect-a-thon stuff is kept to a minimum.  This one ranks: As good as I remembered it.

Mario Sunshine - In my mind I kept thinking this game was better than people gave it credit for.  Replaying it right after Mario 64 repulsed me quite a bit, actually.  I could barely play any of it without wanting to just shut it off.  They nailed Mario's movement - controlling him is like a dream, but EVERYTHING ELSE in the game is a significant step down.  I'm even going to extend that to the graphics, since despite their previous-gen look, at least there was better art design and more creativity in 64.  This one?  A lot worse than I remembed it.

Wind Waker - 4 years of listening to jaded internet whiners made me forget how good this game actually is.  I'm actually watching someone who has never played a Zelda before and mostly only plays PC games play it.  Through that lens, it seems not to be any easier than the rest of the series up until that point - it's just that most of us had already gotten so good at the Zelda formula that it made it seem so.  The sailing is also not NEARLY as awful as most people make it out to be, or how I remembered it.  You get the warping ability right around the point where it would become annoying, and at that point getting ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD takes no more than like 3 minutes.  In the end?  Much better than I was remembering it.

Okay, the Zelda one I just threw in because it's been on my mind.  As for Mario, everything I've seen for Galaxy looks like it's taking its cues from Mario 64 and not Sunshine.  The only thing I'm NOT assured of is whether or not there's going to be crap like the stupid stupid blue coins and whatnot from Sunshine.  If every star is as worth getting as they were in 64, this could easily be game-of-the-year material.  I have high hopes!

Sooooo, does that mean you can finally play your PSP on the television?? If so, I'm totally in!! Although, I'm not certain that's the case. I read on IGN that the PSP will allow you to see videos and photos via  the TV, but they didn't actually say play games...

Jay Jul 13, 2007 (edited Jul 13, 2007)

That's an interesting point. I saw the conference and came away thinking you could play games on the television but, now that you bring it up, I'm not sure they said that. But my poor memory is well documented. I'll see what I can find out.

Edit: Okay, word on the street is they said it could be used for "all PSP functionality"

Ryu Jul 13, 2007

Eh, I got my used PSP in great condition for really cheap and I really don't have much of an interest in being able to play the games on the tv now.  Faster loading times would be great though, but considering how little I play my PSP (or my DS, which is why I never got a DS Lite), I'll pass on this new hardware.  Interestingly though, despite the 140 upcoming DS games by year's end, I think I only care about 2 and out of the who knows how many PSP games I care about 4.
