Nintendo has posted the first, of apparently quite a few movies to come out before the game is released!  Goto:

http://mario.nintendo.com/

well, I have to admit, I'm not quite as excited as I thought I would be... maybe things will change before the release, but I doubt any Mario game can match the beauty that was SM3!  Also, I share the fear expressed about the gameplay.  From what I can tell, the control looks sluggish, akin to the original Super Mario.  I hope I'm mistaken, but it doesn't look as smooth as SM3 nor SMW, which is a major bummer!

cheers,

The video shows off a generous amount of the new gameplay features, though it's too bad it's not running at full speed resolution.  The actual live video clips showed a much smoother game.

Needless to say, I'm amped.  Me thinks I'll go on a personal media blackout until release time, though -- so I'll be skipping out on the next three videos.

I think you meant framerate. Resolution and speed are both different. wink

Yep, my mistake.  It felt funny as I was writing it, actually.  o_O

I have the opposite problem as you.  I found SMB's controls to be more precise and SMB3 to be sluggish.  SMW had better controls than SMB3.

SMB3 has one of the best level designs.

Don't quote me on this, but I think I remember reading an interview that asked that question and they said they didn't want to have a flying item this time.  I could be wrong, though.

If it's any sluggish as Super Mario 64 DS, I might hold off on this purchase for now.

I'm pretty much boycotting any video at the moment as well...I bought the DS specifically for this game, so I'll see it for the first time when I play it. I kind of expected more SMB1 than Mario 3 or SMW to begin with, so I'm not surprised...I was able to cope with the controls in all three (Mario 3 felt the loosest to me, which was good in the sense it felt faster than the other two, but bad because I missed a lot of jumps and only had myself to blame).

Peach is a good 2D fix at the moment, but I'm hoping it's just an appetizer for the main course...One thing I do hope they keep is the classic "hold button to dash" mechanic, something I miss a great deal playing Peach. I still end up pretending I'm dashing though, just from conditioned reflex.

Hahahahahaha I did the same thing.  Also I hope the controls are designed so that Y is fireball/dash and B is jump.  Having the buttons moved around from traditional Mario games in Peach kinda screwed me up.

Well, we're all in luck there.  One of the IGN videos from the GDC shows a scene with Mario running and jumping; and the player is clearly holding the Y button to dash *and* doing periodic fireballs with the same button.  And yes, the jump is conveniently mapped to the B button.  Check it out, it's the video marked "Fast Platforming":

Looking at the video, it seems Mario walks and runs in the SMB64/SMB3 style.  But we know the video isn't running at a full framerate, so wait for the game to be put up in stores as a demo.

Moreover, Craig has his surprisingly early review up on the game.

Good, I was hoping they'd get this review cranked out before E3.  Now I just have to hurry up and finish Peach before my copy of NSMB arrives on the 17th (stupid 2-day shipping...).
