C'mon, you know we've gotta have a thread for this. :)

While we wait for the complete trailer (which, at this point, is rumored to be anywhere from nine to fifteen minutes in length), I will say this about the teaser version: Raiden is scaring the hell outta me now.

And is it just me, or is Ocelot bearing a striking resemblance to The Sorrow now?  I wonder if that was a conscious design choice?

That's what I heard.  See, I knew this was a marketing conspiracy from the start!  And sadly enough, it's working on me, too.

XLord007 May 9, 2006

According to IGN, the full trailer is supposed to show up at Konami's website, but I tried both the U.S. and Japanese sites and they're both inaccessible (due to what I can only assume is too much traffic).  Still, when it does come up, if it's some screwball format like they tried last time, I would appreciate it if someone could link it in a normal format.  Thanks.

FYI... the second link gives a "Forbidden" message (for me anyway).

Anyway, I love the idea for the plot of this game, but I naturally have concerns about the gameplay (party because some of the pre-E3 stuff I read about it made it sound like a Strategy game and party because of the PSP's poor controls for 3D games).  Still, I'm looking forward to it at this point.

The MGSPO looks like a widescreen version of MGS3:S online mode.

XLord007 May 11, 2006

Ok, I've now seen both the full length (14 minute) MGS4 trailer and the MGSPO trailer (both are available in streaming form at Konami's E3 site).

MGS4: Holy freaking shit do I want this game.  I hope it gets delayed a bunch so the PS3 can drop in price. :-)

MGSPO: I'm a bit confused.  The first half of the trailer gives you all this really awesome story teaser stuff that makes me want it very much, but then it starts talk to about online recruitment to grow your squad and then spins back around and says something about a "great single-player campaign" as if that somehow wasn't a primary focus.  So now I'm really not sure what the deal is.  If the single-player mode delivers on the storyline promises of the first part of the trailer, then this will be a must have for me.  If not, then shame on Konami.  Also, shame on Konami for the idiotic name (Portable Ops?  Try harder!).  Hopefully they can conjure up a real title before release.

A 80GB Blu-ray player with MGS4 and a Dual Shock 3?  S'yeah, please.  I know you're at the same purchasing crossroads as I am at this point, XLord; what say you about this deal?

I have to do some more research on exactly how the return policies at the big box stores work, but I think this will be pretty much perfect for me.  Having no need for a PS3 outside of MGS4, I've been planning to take a week off of work for MGS4's release, buy the game and system, play through the game, and then return the system while either eating the cost of the game or selling it used.  Now that the game will come with the system, I should be able to return the whole thing without having to eat any costs (I already have the HDMI cable I need).  This should work out nicely.

And yes, I realize that the above is out of character for me since I'm normally an OCD collector type, but these new-fangled systems are just too damn expensive.  Even I can't justify $500 + tax just to play one game.

I'm going to agree with you in principal there.  Damn, I really want to see MGS4.  But picking up a console that plays both movies... which I don't watch... and other games... well, I like fLoW.  Yea, I don't think so, especially since I still need to buy a Dreamcast!

But I feel even a refitted PS3 still isn't pulling its weight for me...

This does seem...alluring. And definitely feasible given the decent-sized tax return likely coming this year. I've always been more or less dreading the point when Sony would make the PS3 mandatory for me due to say, Ape Escape 4 or the next game from the Ico/Colossus people or something along those lines. But if this set has the PS2 compatability included, it may just be a sensible purchase to make.

On the other hand, if you combine this with the earlier slip by the Konami rep who said MGS4 would have to sell a million at launch (since retracted, officially), this could be seen as a test. If in a very literal sense MGS4 manages to sell a good number of PS3s on its own, then there would be little need to pursue the oft-rumored 360 port. But maybe I'm just reading too far into it.

Qui-Gon Joe Feb 28, 2008

Just checked the backwards compatibility status for a lot of my favorite PS2 games on the software-emulation-based 80 gigs.  Having ANY of the three Shadow Hearts games work without glitches is worth me skipping this MGS bundle and searching for a 60 gig even if it's not as good of a deal.  Ugh, Sony is working REALLY HARD to make me not want their system this gen.

Early news just broke that the U.S. will be getting a Limited Edition release for MGS4.   Retail is going for $85 USD, which will net you:

-Metal Gear Solid 4
-Blu-ray Bonus Disc containing two making-of documentaries and an interview with Hideo Kojima
-Four chapters of the graphical novel
-Metal Gear import soundtrack CD

All of this will be housed in a metallic collector's tin.  In addition, reserving the LE at Gamestop will net you an exclusive art book, along with the Metal Gear Saga Vol 2 disc/beta testing code for Metal Gear Online.

I'm dying to see shots of the packaging and to know what's going to be on the soundtrack CD.

Any word of what's going to be on Vol.2? I have the first DVD, and that covers everything up to MGS4...

The disc is to contain a prologue that recaps the Metal Gear franchise, a 20th Anniversary retrospective, character bios for Big Boss, Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, and Solidus Snake, plus a complete collection of MGS4 trailers (including the international ones.)  The case housing the disc will also contain the code used to test the MGO beta.

And, I should've been more clear in stating that you DON'T have to preorder the Limited Edition or at Gamestop for Saga alone.  You can preorder the regular edition to receive Saga, and I'm sure that most other specialized retailers will be participating in the deal as well.

Zane Mar 23, 2008

Ooooh, interesting. I don't have any interest in MGS4 (or the console to play it on), but I might preorder to get that DVD and then cash the game back in. Thanks for the info!

You probably won't even have to go that far.  Apparently, they're going to be offering Metal Gear Saga with preorders starting in April.  After obtaining the disc, you should be able to cancel or move the preorder to something else well in advance before the actual game comes out.

There's just one caveat with Saga that I only thought about now: it might actually be featured on a Blu-ray disc, and not a standard DVD.  Take a look at this shot of the Japanese LE packaging:

http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/1535 … gs4vr0.jpg

I'm not certain if that disc is the same as Saga, but what I've heard is that the trailers they were including are all going to be in high-def.  So, it might be a Blu-ray disc after all.  And, of course, unless you have a Blu-ray player......

I stand corrected.  Source confirmed with me that Saga will indeed be issued on a standard DVD.  That Japanese packaging shot is of the Blu-ray documentary disc that's going to be included with the Limited Edition version over here.

Went ahead and paid off my Limited Edition preorder at Gamestop today.  Also put down for the LE version of the Prima Games strategy guide and a Dual Shock 3.  Grand total?  $184.37.  Yes, my MGS fanaticism blinds me.  And my pocketbook.

I just gave Saga Vol. 2 a full viewing.  It's a good watch; the Retrospective is basically an English re-dub of the Japanese bonus documentary featured on the previously released 20th Anniversary Collection.  It makes for a good overview of the series when coupled with the Saga Vol. 1 documentary.  The trailers are in standard def, and sadly, full-screen.  Plus, there's some censored cuts made to the more violent bits of the GDC 2007 trailer.  All the same, it is cool having a comprehensive collection of the trailers here in one place.

But the most important thing is the MGO beta code.  Lemme know if any of you are partaking in the trial version at month's end.  Should be a lot of fun. :)

How disappointing.  I expected the queen of all things Metal Gear to pre-order the gun-metal gray Japanese PS3 with MGS4 logo.

I know, I know..... I was almost considering it, but I really needed a Blu-ray player that could play region 1 movies too.

Anyway, the queen was actually throwing around the wild idea of getting a tattoo of this.  That just may depend on much I end up liking MGS4. ;)

It's a fox and it is Kojima Productions' emblem, most likely a reference to FOXHOUND from Metal Gear. Being that Metal Gear could be called Mr. Kojima's flagship series, I am not surprised he chose it. smile

That's correct.  To be more accurate, it's the "FOX" unit's emblem from MGS3, before FOXHOUND was established.  It's the coolest of the fox-related symbols, me thinks:

MGS3's FOX:

MG1, MG2's FOXHOUND:

The current FOXHOUND:

Marsupials?  Hey, I liked the second and third PSOne Crash Bandicoot games well enough, but I'm not THAT big of a fan to have him emblazoned on my bod....

Konami issued their press release and packaging details for MGS4.  Gamingbits reports:

http://www.gamingbits.com/content/view/3841/2/

It appears the Limited Edition is going to be a Gamestop exclusive, and will sport a different box cover art from the standard edition.  The soundtrack CD looks to be MGS4-specific as well -- likely a 'best-of' collection of tracks that will be culled from the upcoming Japanese OST's two-disc set.

I'm glad I plunked down the extra $25 for the LE, because damn, that cover art is sexy.  As I say, if it ain't Shinkawa, it ain't MGS.

Pellasos Apr 10, 2008

the standard edition is clearly a letdown. lets see if they screw up the euro version as well.

The EU version is looking pretty dope, too.  It shares the same Shinkawa-based design as the Japanese version, but with a different color scheme:

Also, Playstation.Blog put together a pretty definitive product listing, detailing the various configurations of the NA release of MGS4.  It seems they're bringing over that limited edition gun-metal PS3 after all.  Damn you, temptation!

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/04/ … -revealed/

Pellasos Apr 10, 2008

ive seen those, but are they confirmed to be final? also i didnt see any confirmation about LEs in other regions.

XLord007 Apr 11, 2008

Also of note is that the PS3 bundle only comes with the regular edition of MGS4.  You would think that they would give you the LE if you're willing to buy a $500 console for one game.  In slightly better news, the gun metal gray PS3 bunlde is coming to America though only in "VERY LIMITED" quantities.  Details on exactly whay that means are supposed to be coming next week.
