Hello Everyone! Just joined & wanted to say that I enjoy this site & the banter that is so respectful & encouraging. As to this post, I really like SQ Chips and cast my vote (for what it is worth) for a release of these "Chips" albums to the general public (iTunes/Amazon mp3). The FF XI Chips selling at CDJapan is very expensive at $52. Is there anyway to possibly order from the Square Enix eStore and ship to US? Thanks for listening and for good community!
James O Aug 24, 2012
Afaik the Squix e-store only ships in Japan.

excellent!!!! all the Chips albums will be available on the e-store Sept 19! But they are e-store exclusives only so it's off to expensive CD Japan special request order I go.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to ask Jerold to order them all from e-Store and ship to you than to pay the "special order fee" for *each CD* from CDJ?

Yeah, you'd only pay a lump total fee + flat store order with Jerold over fee/shipping per item with CDJ. Never understood why people think CDJ's service is a good thing.
Anyway, that's great news that they'll be available outside the event as I hated the thought of contacting my buyer so soon after C82.

It might but he tacks on his fees too so it would probably work out to be the same. I've already bugged him quite a bit over the past couple months too so I don't want to wear out my goodwill...

He's making money off you, not sure how that would ever be wearing out goodwill.

FWIW Jerold does do this kind of work for relatively cheap. I remember in 2004 getting a whole bunch of Lunar albums off Y!J (was actually getting them for a friend), and comparing what Jerold charged me to what SMJ charges, I'd say Jerold saved me a solid $50, if not more.
So I can understand not wanting to bother him too much. He's a good dude, but he is just one man.

His charges are about the same as other services now with his new fee structure, but I'd still rather support him than some random website. He's never let me down and I've been using him for almost 10 years now.
Ramza Aug 25, 2012
Aha, I see. Yeah I haven't reached out to Jerold for any orders in at least 5 years. Does he have a website?

Nope, same old email he's always been using at mydestiny.net

Hello Everyone! I would love to listen to all these "Chip" albums, but the price at CDJapan for these (based on FF XI Chips) is around $52 (not including shipping) whereas on the SQIX eStore they sell for $26 (not including shipping). $52 is a bit high for each album. Are there any alternatives to picking these up from CDJapan...a different store that might sell them for less? Would Jerold be willing to deal with a newbie like myself (I do not wish to impose upon him.)? What are the chances of these albums being released digitally? Super thanks for any response to these questions. Peace!
James O Aug 27, 2012 (edited Aug 27, 2012)
if they're e-store exclusives they're unlikely to be released digitally... hence being "e-store exclusives".
You could ask Jerold to do an order for you but he has his fees as well that he would add to do it for you. Alternatively for buying them second-hand you could wait for the albums to show up on Yahoo Japan Auctions and hope any sellers list it for less but seeing as these are premium exclusive items they probably won't have lowered prices for quite some time. Jerold could bid on them for you too but then you run the risk of competition on them and of course there are the fees for bidding on items for you too.

Are e-store exclusives usually pressed in limited quantities? Should I be worried about scarcity?
Ramza Aug 29, 2012
Hey all,
OSV will have our annual check-in interview with Square Enix Music dept up in a few days.
And there's going to be some good news regarding the "Chips" albums in there.
So keep an eye out for that!

So I just looked at CD Japan and their prices too. Can someone explain to me why FF Chips #s 8-10 are $26, but VII and XI are twice as much?

My guess is that they forgot to include the service fee for those other albums, since the album pages themselves do state they are special request items.
Judgment Day Aug 29, 2012 (edited Aug 29, 2012)
So is CD Japan subject to raising the prices and maybe honoring those who preordered the Chips Discs at the lower price if they found out about it? If so, I might as well get those 3 now before they find out what's up. Perhaps those extra EMS charges will be added when the order is placed.

Hello Ramza! I am pretty sure that you are limited in how much info you can give out before the Square Enix Interview is posted, so I will totally understand if you cannot answer this question: Should those of us contemplating buying the pre-order "Chips" albums from CDJapan (although I am a bit confused by their special order system) sit tight and wait till after the OSV Interview is posted before making a purchasing decision? Many thanks and peace!

So here's how it probably works. I put in a special request for VII thru X chips albums. Everything for CD Japan's fees is tacked on to the FF VII Chips CD page entry and the rest are just listed as normal retail price. But since I put in the special req for all 4 albums i had to order all 4 albums or they cancel it. each page however still has its own entry so when other people go searching they come across it and are confused somewhat.
Same deal with XI Chips. It was also a special order but on its own since it came out earlier by itself since they wanted to push the FF XI 10th Anniversary, so that CDJapan FFXI Chips order page has its own fees associated with it. Who would have known that they would have pushed out more Chips albums? It was a complete surprise when the FF 25th Anniversary event pdf came out.
Now if someone just comes across FF VIII ~ X Chips and thinks, "ooh deal", I'm not sure if CD Japan would let you order just those individually or not.

I don't have dates available, but let me say this: I'm personally choosing not to order from CDJ or send someone to buy from the event. Because there will be a much lower-cost option available. Just wait.

Super thanks to Ramza for the answer! Will the much lower-cost option be made available to people in the United States (I am in California)? Oh My! I am super excited and happy for good music!

you'll see tomorrow.

hmmm interesting... though i've already made my pre-order so i can't go back on it now. Oh wells...

So reading OSV and Destructoid this morning it seems that the FF VII ~ XI Chips albums will become available via the Square Enix US online store.
Good for Americans, but the Square Enix US store hasn't been so friendly to Canadians in the past. I've already got my CD Japan order so I can't cancel it anyways.
Ramza Aug 31, 2012
Yup, that's the news. NA and EU stores will stock the album. No idea when, so you'll get your money's worth by getting the albums *now* as opposed to later, James! ^_^
Judgment Day Aug 31, 2012
Based on that interview, which is certainly another topic for another day:
If Seiken 2 is as popular as Seiken 3, why does Seiken 3 warrant a demand for an arrangement CD and Seiken 2 doesn't?

Seems like great news! Just wanted to check....are the NA (and EU) stores going to be stocking just FF XI Chips or all of them (currently FF VII - XI Chips)? Peace!
Ramza Aug 31, 2012
I know it's vague in the interview, but the word choice of "these" instead of "this" suggests all of these eStore-exclusive "Chips" albums will be in NA and EU stores. The demand is there for all of them, and they know it.
GoldfishX Aug 31, 2012
I'm no fan of the whole FF milking (25th anniversary or not), but the Chips arranges have been one of the freshest things to come along in eons in VGM, so I'm looking forward to these. Is like the perfect balance of enhancing the originals while maintaining the "gamey" feel.
I know I've plugged this album before, but people should check out the excellent Chiptune Rockman album if they get a chance. I'm hoping they do a follow-up to this one at some point.

I got it. So you're basically saying:
If "Consumer X" wants to buy Final Fantasy XI Chips, they can.
If "Consumer X" wants to buy Final Fantasy X Chips, they must buy VII-IX (in ADDITION to X), or CDJapan will not process the order and cancel it.

No... that's only for HIS special order. If you want VII, IX and XI, do your own special order for them. Do NOT use the already existing order pages, use their special order requisition system and put in the 3 links to the 3 items you want.
