Being that Square Enix is making it, my heart is aflutter at the thought of a Square composer dabbling in the Mario world again... Shimomura's entries are fantastic and I really like Mitsuda's Mario Party work.  Then there's Sakuraba's stuff for the Camelot-developed games.  Has there been any word on who's doing the music for this one?

There's gonna be a Mario Basketball? This either slipped past me (not that that's any surprise), or I vaguely remember something about it. What I'm really waiting is for them to make a Mario volleyball game...

Qui-Gon Joe Jul 15, 2006

Yeah, it's for the DS, by Square.  There are even some of their characters showing up in it, along with the Mario crew.  You can check out the website here:

I dunno about who's composing it (I'd hope for Shimomura if it's a Square person) but check out this commercial for the game.  That's gonna be fun as all hell.  Genius way of using the stylus to play hoops.  Plus those Japanese actors playing as Mario and Luigi are too awesome. smile

The composer is Square Enix's Masayoshi Soken (Front Mission 5, etc).

Qui-Gon Joe Jul 22, 2006

Thanks for the info!  I've not heard any of Soken's music before... he's a new name for me.  What does anyone here think of him?

He did the crazy obscure vocal theme on Front Mission 5 ("Blue Stream") which was just pure weird. He starred and composed the crazy music to a crazy Square Enix commercial promoting pens (called 'Batoenman'). I haven't heard the music, but he did 'Nichibeikan Pro Baseball - Final League' and also 'World Fantasista' (with Takeharu Ishimoto). He also did the sound design on Drag-on Dragoon 2, and is composing and arranging alongside Kenji Ito, Tsuyoshi Sekito and Junya Nakano in Seiken Densetsu 4. So yeah, he's a pretty mysterious dude.

What, a DS game?

That is all of the BGM, I'm pretty sure.

Sorry, no Final Fantasy remixes, but... stg08.mp3 and stg10.mp3 are neat surprises. =D

Also, sorry about the clipping bass in some of them... the sound engine I ripped these with isn't quite finished yet, but it should absolutely give you a general idea of what's goin' on here.

KujaFFman Jul 23, 2006

Yes, it's him.

Thank you Amber for the rip! This is very good stuff, true to Nintendo sports game.

Qui-Gon Joe Jul 23, 2006

Yes, thanks Amber!  Track 8 is AWESOME.

Meh, Zoopd should just release this VGMTrans thingy to the public, because that's just teasing. smile

Trust me when I say it's far from finished.
DS music with stereo samples doesn't play back at all yet without sounding all static-y.
The version I used to record this music crashed after I switched sample sets every time...

Just be patient. :) He's working on rewriting it from the ground up, anyway.

http://www.vgmtrans.com will have announcements regarding public release when it's ready.

Yeah, but I meant the game. I thought it wouldn't be released until September?

Datschge Jul 23, 2006

The Japanese version is out already.

lordskylark Jul 23, 2006

Just curious... Is anyone currently working on a DSF format? (or is that what that site it working on?)

Thanks,
~Andy

oddigy Jul 23, 2006

Not that I know of.
DSF is dreamcast
NDSF would probably be NDS
but there are no plans, unless someone is working in secret.
To create a PSF format for NDS, the sound driver would need to be emulated.  This is something that I don't think anyone has completely done yet.

VGMTrans parses the sound data in the rom and plays back the sequence as MIDI and sampleset as DLS using DirectMusic.  It's far from perfect currently.
