Ah, well... it's because I don't consider this as a spoiler that I didn't add a warning. Don't worry, this is not what you may be thinking about. Well, at least not what it should be referring to. This is nothing compared to the *second* so-called spoiler.

Nekobo Jun 23, 2008

OMG OMG, thank you so much! I <3 you!

Track 18 makes me melt...especially when the trumpets kick in. Why isn't this on the OST? Ditto for track 15.

I went ahead and finished up the recording session last night.  It became apparent that I was going to run out of space on my Briefcase, so to make it easier, I've uploaded the entire thing to a zip file.  (I left off the Boktai and Conclusion tracks, since they're not necessarily part of the main game - and instead left those on the Briefcase.)  I'm fairly confident that I've captured all of the relevant in-game BGM specific to MGS4, but I also recorded two choice cutscenes - which I absolutely implore you NOT to listen to until you've finished the game, as they're extremely spoiler-heavy due to its accompanying dialogue.  I just had to grab them, though, as they contain some terrific musical cues.  In fact, I'd suggest avoiding the entire download period, since there are a couple of in-game track spoilers as well.

Also, I read that you haven't really played MGO, but in the list of music you can select during a mission, there is this track called *SPOILER* Rex VS. Ray. I don't remember if it plays during this (epic!) battle, but it is freaking awesome. Do you know more about this?

Can't say that I do.  I REALLY haven't played MGO yet (outside of the beta, actually), but the track you're speaking of isn't...... Infinite Loop, is it?  At least I know that's the track for the actual battle in MGS4.

If you liked that, I think you'll enjoy the first twenty seconds of this next cutscene.  This was a last minute recording, so I'm just going to upload it to the Briefcase.  It's one of the final ending scenes, so yeah.... **BIG OL' SPOILER**.   But if there was one sequence in the entire game that made me tear up with emotions, it's this one:

Damn, that's the one. Thanks for pointing this out. The thing is, I was deeply impressed by the melody at 2:14 while playing MGO with this BGM selected, but I thought it was more prominent within the track because I heard this precise moment quite often. It's pretty intense for an online battle.

By the way, MGO allows you to chose within a large number of BGMs from the entire series: all areas in MGS4 plus this track I was talking about, MGS3 indoors and outdoors, MGS2 tanker and plant, MGS1, MG2: Solid Snake and MG1, plus some original MGO tunes.

And thanks for the new recording. I loved the ending to this game. *SPOILER:* I feel it's really respectful toward Snake. And I was impressed when I notied that the lyrics for "Here's To You" perfectly match the story: my interpretation may be a little far-fetched, but I think the reason why Lisbeth Scott first says "here's to you" without adding "Nicola and Bart" is a way to be more general and, indeed, to refer to Snake. Also, "the last and final moment is yours" is a relieving line since, although we all expected Snake to commit suicide, he is eventually able to die as a normal old man, among his close friends. Such dignity is truly heartwarming. I guess Kojima wanted us to believe that it would be a tragic ending. But...

Seeing as i dont know how to do that whitened spolier text, i'll just be very vague...
Do you think you could rip the music (or more the cutscene) that plays when Raiden is with Snake, and does something heroic... At the end of Act 4, you hear a coversation from MGS2 between Rose and Jack as it plays.

I know which one you're talking about, and I'm surprised I didn't grab that one either.  It's quite a beautiful version of.... MGS2's Can't Say Goodbye To Yesterday.  Gads, MGS4 really does have some wonderful recurring thematic threads. ^_^

By the way, if you need to see how to white out for spoilers, just hit 'Quote' to reply to my message, and you can see how I did it.

Are you sure this is not MGS2's Who Am I Really?. I have just seen this scene again, and I have noticed that the first notes are the same.

Yep, you're absolutely correct; it definitely is the last part of.... Who Am I Really?/The Freedom To Decide.  My bad.  Lovely arrangement all the same, and here it is - along with another recording of another portion of the ending.

Though most of you Metal Gear music fans had probably heard it already, I can't recommend Reuben Kee's fan arrangement "Legend of the Snake 2 - Snake Versus Dragon" enough.  Especially for anyone who misses the Metal Gear Solid Main Theme, this is pretty close to what I've envisioned a MGS4 mixing of the MGS3 "Metal Gear Saga" version and the Main Theme to sound like.  His style fits in remarkably well.

Reuben Kee's site could do with an update, you'd think someone would mention his death on there.

With so many composers involved with the music in MGS4, Hibino and GEM Impact's contributions kind of got lost in the mix.  It turns out they wrote about 90 minutes of music for the cinematic sequences.  Hibino was kind enough to share information about GEM Impact's contributions as well as providing information regarding the individual team members at GEM in an interview with OSV:

http://www.originalsoundversion.com

It'd be cool if they were able to put out an album of their MGS4 music through GEM Factory.  Would that ever happen?

Vaeran Jun 30, 2008 (edited Jun 30, 2008)

I just downloaded your rip last night after finishing MGS4, Angela -- thanks so much for your hard work!

It's really a shame they left the new "Enclosure" arrange off of the OST... it's so beautiful, but it's just so hard to listen to with Otacon sobbing over top of it. My heart just breaks for the poor guy every time. :\ Spoilers just in case someone thinks Otacon crying is a spoiler, in which case they probably haven't played any MGS games before.

Actually, while I'm talking about this, what is the line Otacon says right after "Why does it always end this way?" It's at 2:15, and Snake and the sound effects almost completely drown it out. Can anyone else catch it?

Angela Jul 1, 2008

My god, I had no idea that Reuben Kee had passed away..... That would explain the lack of email correspondence.  May he rest in peace; he was an awesome musician, and from what I've gathered, a cool person in general.

Interesting to hear that GEM Impact had a far more integral role in the soundtrack than once thought.  Now more than ever do I want to hear each of the members' individual contributions -- but as the interview alludes, the collaboration effort seemed so highly integrated that I wonder if it'd be possible to narrow down any one single variable from each of the composer's works?

Vaeran wrote:

Out of all the times in the series that he does cry, when he does so in "A Hero's Rest" is what tore me up the most.  Subtle tears > Outright bawling. ;)

If I remember correctly, he's saying, "Just when I thought I was ready to fall in love again...."  Sometimes you just wanna give the guy a big ol' sympathy hug.  -_-;

Who knows?  Maybe something will turn up in the future.  wink

I made a few more MGS4 recordings recently, including a second variation of Screaming Mantis and the corridor-trekking version of Guns of The Patriots.  For simplicity's sake, I've re-uploaded the soundtrack in its entirety, including the two tracks above and any cutscene pieces I had recorded before:

Finally, I made a recording of the recently released "Battle At Highland", the Another Side version of the South America alert theme.

Damn it, I just keep finding new tracks to record for MGS4.  Wouldn't have guessed there was a second variation of "Haven Troopers" to be found until someone pointed it out to me.   The one is from the Act 1 Advent Palace confrontation, whereas the previous one is from the Act 5 battle.

Sorry to bump an old thread but, erm, first thanks Angela for the latest rips, and then I was wondering: anybody knows the composer(s) for Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel? I'm sure I saw a name somewhere, but can't remember where.

By the way, there are some iPod songs from MGS2: Digital Graphic Novel in MGS4, "Big Boss" and "Harrier", and both are composed by Norihiko Hibino. Angela, did you made a rip of these and of "Love Theme ~hum version~"?

Chris Aug 24, 2008 (edited Aug 24, 2008)

Norihiko Hibino and GEM Impact did Bande Dessinée 2. I'm not sure about the original, though, so I'm interested too. A rip of either would also be awesome.

Yes sir, I did -- and I've been meaning to upload them.  Here's Big Boss and Harrier; I'll have the Love Theme up in a bit, since there's some weird sound glitches coming from the first recording I made.

Big Boss, Harrier:

I'm not certain who composed the original Digital Graphic Novel either, though.  I'll do some fishing around.

EDIT: Love Theme ~hum version~ now up.  It's a lovely, lengthy variation, by the way.  Much more emphasis on the guitar and violins.

Have you guys heard the new track Forerunner yet?  It's the Another Side version of the Middle East alert theme, and it's pretty kickin'.  It's unabashedly different from the usual "Solid" sound, maybe a bit of an AC!D feel during its more orchestral-progressive moments.  Very cool.

Only a week left!

So, it's been a few months since I've turned on the game, and it looks like a number of new Another Side tracks have been made available since then.  Imagine my surprise when I saw that they put the MGS4 arrangement of "Enclosure" up.  This one was sorely missed from the official OST, and I'm delighted that it's now available:

Hi Angela,

if it's possible, could you please record the Big Boss version of the end game ranking music as well?

Many thanks in advance
