What is MSX, praytell?

Dais Jul 1, 2008

It was an type of personal computer produced during the 80s, like the Commodore 64 and others. Saw usage in Europe and much wider usage in Japan. Received quite a lot of games, and it's where Konami first really took off - the "real" Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 were both on MSX variants. There were quite a few original games for it, as well as lots of ports. I believe it was substantially more suitable for action games than it's main competitor, the PC-88 (and eventually 98). Anyway, you can read all up on it at Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSX
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MSX_games
http://www.msx.org/

While it still has a fair share of enthusiasts with hardware, most enjoy it now through emulation or special digital distribution services like the Engrossing Game Gallery. Actually, there was a special partnership with the people behind Project EGG and some other dudes to produce English versions of classic MSX games and make them available for download (at a price) called WOOMB, but it's apparentlly caught in legal issues...?

That said, McCall...do you find those versions of the Ys games satisfactory? And while I can recognize getting Hydlide 3, isn't Hydlide 2 supposed to be about as bad as the first one?

EDIT: The game is coming to XBLA and PSN as well.

Apparently Capcom took that back today and is now saying that the game is only coming to WiiWare.  I assume this means that the game is in reality a timed exclusive to Wii and will show up on the other systems later, but who knows.

This makes the most sense.  Capcom + exclusivity = hahahahahahahahaha.

Wait, remakes of 2 and 3? I thought only 1 was remade...if the others were remade, I'd certainly be interested in you making a topic about them when they arrive!

One thing I definitely agree with is that some games have become way too freaking complicated.  Now that I have a PS3, I've been downloading demos from the PS Store to see what's out there, and some of these are so freaking complicated that I lose interest after a few minutes.  I tried out Civilation Revolution and Condemned 2 tonight, and the sea of options in the first and move combinations in the second is dizzying.  No thanks.  They need less stuff like this and more stuff like PixelJunk Monsters (demo for that one had me *this* close to clicking on the "buy full game" link).

Aside from some of the pretentiousness in this article (core vs. hardcore, c'mon...), it's not bad.  I disagree with two things in particular: the slide and the shop.  For me, the old school NES games are a lot less fun without the slide and with the shop.  Having to collect cash to get stuff from the shop slows down the game experience.  For this type of MM game, all items/weapons/upgrades should either be received from bosses or hidden in levels.  No shop, please.

Ashley Winchester Jul 6, 2008

On Slide:

I don't think adding the slide in MM3 was a real big deal but if this is Mega Man 9 there should be a slide unless it's falls between Mega Man 2 and 3... Mega Man "unlearning" things just for the sake of not wanting to incorporate it is kind of, well weak. Same with the Mega Buster, that's not a big deal either as long as the damage done/recieved isn't out of wack like some of the earlier games.

On Shop:
My favorite Mega Man games (outside MML which, I know, some don't consider to be MM games) don't have shops so I think this is kinda lame. If it ends up being like MMX8 where finding things in the field really wasn't really fun because you had to find rare metals and then pay to get stuff made in the shop. I want my powerups with as little hastle outside the challenge of initally finding and obtaining them.

GoldfishX Jul 6, 2008

I dunno about the shop...Lords of Thunder and maybe Fantasy Zone are the only old-school examples that used it really well (and that was because of all the zigzagging to get money). MM, I think it would slow everything down too much.

The slide can come or go...I liked it okay, but I didn't seem to miss it in 1 or 2, so...yeah.

But PLEASE: None of the those stupid MM6-style Rush Power-ups.

I actually liked the Rush powerups in MM6... I thought they added a lot to a game that would have even been more standard without them.

The GamesRadar article mentioned that the shop items include "an energy balancer (distributes energy to weapons that need it most), spike shoes (protect against one-hit kills) and new armor that reduces damage by half." With the exception of the energy balancer (which should be standard in MM games), they make the game much easier. By relegating them to the shop, people can choose how hard they want to make the game. The only thing I'm wondering about is if they'll make the shop use Wii points.

Oddly, the article also mentions that some of the music is straight out of MM2. I wonder if it's there simply as a placeholder or if they'll actually use it?

I really can't wait for this game and soundtrack now.  Those tunes sound so promising!

Music is interesting -- makes me feel all nostalgic all over again. Gameplay looks like Mega Man and Mega Man 2 (sound effects, somewhat limited graphics), levels' appearance resemble that same mix; the first looking like Crash Man and Bomb Man and the second a fusion between Quick Man and Flash Man.

I only wish they had used Mega Man 3 for the basic engine... MM2 wasn't as smooth as 3~6.

I disagree. The engine for MM3 and beyond really sucked the awesomeness and kinetic energy out of the series' presentation. Transitions shouldn't fade in and out; they should snap. Death explosions shouldn't be bewbewbewbew...; they should be DNNVDNNVdnnvdnnvdnnv. I heartily approve of their course of action.

But the music doesn't sound like Kawakami at all. Time to go rend my garments in anguish and stuff.

I really disliked Mega Man III because the crash damage you recieved when touching a boss was outrageous in some cases... three hits would about take you out.

Amazingu Jul 9, 2008

Hmmm, music sounds good.
Can't say I'm too happy with the fact that they chose the SFX from the first game though.
And why that ancient style Mettaur!? The later ones looked much better...

Carl Jul 10, 2008

I just want to play it, screw all the squibbles about details.

All I need to know is that it's 8-bit style and THAT'S ALL that matters for me to make a purchase.

Kenology Jul 10, 2008 (edited Jul 10, 2008)

From WiiWare exclusive, to PSN & XBLA release as well, back to WiiWare exclusive, and now back to WiiWare, PSN, & XBLA...  hmm

Also in that link, Megaman 1 & 2 coming to WiiWare (not VC!?) and official trailer.  Be warned: game looks and sounds awesome.

EDIT: They have WiiWare in the headline, but MM1&2 are coming to VC.

Looks and sounds awesome.

You can get a glimpse of 5-7 stages, enemies, the opening cutscene, silhouettes of the robot masters... it looks like it's straight off an NES cart. The only thing that stuck out as "not NES Megaman to me" was a stage where he was walking in between background layers (of grass), but if SMB3 warp whistle trick memories serve, the NES was capable of that.

Try not to read too much into Roll riding Rush Jet just yet.

My favorite part is how they show the progression of sprites from 1-6 to 7 to 8 and then back to 1-6 again. :-p

Daniel K Jul 11, 2008

Agreed, it truly looks awesome! It looks like probably the first Mega Man game since MM6 on the NES that I'll find fun to play (I know a lot of people like the X series, but personally I think the series turned to crap once it hit the SNES). Too bad I don't have a next-gen console or any plan of getting one.... If I did, I'd snap this one up in an instant.

Is anyone out there talented enough to edit together a looped version of the main music from the new trailer (taken from IGN or Kotaku - YouTube's sound is inferior)?  I could listen to that thing all day!

We'll have to beg Capcom for an OST release.  Even with just two tracks, that music is sounding mighty fine.

It's coming to PSN and XBLA, too.  That's great news for me and the PS3, and very bad news for my Wii.  Nintendo had better kick some ass at E3, or else.  neutral

I wonder how Capcom will handle the presentation on PS3 and 360?  I don't think 720p HD would be impossible, since it appears the game is made to look like an NES game (instead of being a true or emulated 8-bit game).  Also, looking at the original Bionic Commando Rearmed trailer, I think it can happen.

Is that Wily?  He looks like Tekken's Heihachi with MGS4 Snake's FaceCamo and Solid Eye.

Amazing! Pays homage not only to the notoriously horrendous original, but to the US & PAL box for 2 as well!

They should've gotten Shinkiro to do this one though.
