Soundtrack Central The best classic game music and more

This may just be the most brilliant idea ever. A brand-new (non-X, non-Zero, non Battle Network) Mega Man game. In 2008. With 8-bit graphics and sound. Plus, a fembot!

If this is a hit, I can only imagine the possibilities. Super Mario Bros. 4, anyone?

Ryu Jun 26, 2008

I don't care for Mega Man games much, but the thought of a revival of old school 2D on Wiiware really is awesome... though now I'm thinking this is how Castlevania Wii will be delivered.

Abrahm Jun 26, 2008

It's gonna be hard to turn this one down.  Looks like my Wii may be taking a step backward from the eBay pit... if this really is a WiiWare exclusive.

Regardless of that, thank the gods for Capcom.  We are not worthy.  Well, some of us aren't.  I think I am, though... or should be.

Wanderer Jun 26, 2008

I'll definitely be picking it up. wink

Daniel K Jun 26, 2008

The Mega Man 9 news were surprising, but this really got me:

Apparently not: http://gonintendo.com/?p=47669

ROFLMAO! Is this for real? I must admit - I could never have seen this coming. Its really a nice thing that you still can get surprised! smile

I wonder how IGA will fit this entry into his carefully arranged and constantly re-edited CV timeline?

Ryu Jun 26, 2008

Huh, a Castlevania fighter?  ... I admit, I'm curious.

GoldfishX Jun 26, 2008

A Castlevania FIGHTER!?...Guess that's the closest they'll come to making a good 3D CV. If it were 2D, I might be interested.

And YES! for MM9. Merciful goddamn heaven must f---ing love me. Hopefully it'll catch on and bring a couple shreds of dignity back to the series again. Maybe show kids today why this series used to actually matter.

Idolores Jun 26, 2008

Jewel Man? Concrete Man? f---ing Hornet Man?

Love the devotion to old school fans, but they're really scraping the barrel for names this time. big_smile:D:D

Mega Man 9
-Sweet jeebus is this a brilliant idea.  Keiji Inafune rocks so much right now.  That said, I do kinda wish they went for slightly upgraded graphics.  You know, retro styled, but not literally NES-graphics.  Is a richer color palette and 16:9 presentation too much to ask for?  Still, can't freakin wait.

Castlevania Judgment
-If there was ever a reason to get IGA the hell away from Castlevania, this is it.  I read through the NP article, and my goodness does this look like a piece of shit.  The idea is just terrible (FYI: he's throwing continuity out the window for this for those of you who care about that stuff), the characters are redesigned -- poorly (by the Death Note guy), the controls are mostly waggle (that won't get annoying), and the graphics look barely better than PS2.  Our only hope here is for a killer remix OST.

Agreed. Upgraded music too! Otherwise, what exactly does MM9 provide other than nostalgia for fans of the series? As for the Castlevania fighter... wow, that does smell horrible! Sounds like pure marketing gimmick, and makes me wonder what's next? Castlevania: the FPS??

cheers,

The chance for people to see why this series actually used to matter. I personally still find the NES Megamans (plus 7 and 8) some of the most well-crafted platform/shooters of all time. I shudder to think of someone playing X7 or X8 or something with EXE in the title, giving up on Megaman and missing everything good about the series. And by keeping it in NES style, we're guaranteed to be spared an unplayable vehicle level (see X7 and X8 again)...That's reason enough to be excited about this one.

Plus NES chiptune music hopefully. I can't wait to hear how this sounds. The last GOOD (not great, but just good) MM soundtrack was X8 for me and before that...um, probably X5 (which was out in 2000/2001). MAYBE EXE Transmission, but my hatred of the game (HOW do you mess up a 2D Megaman this badly!?) has soured my liking of the music.

I've always been a fan of Bass though...I hope they do something with him this time around. Maybe bring Dr. Cossack back for a round.

Carl Jun 27, 2008

If this ends up being true, it'll certainly be my first Wiiware purchase.

Ashley Winchester Jun 27, 2008 (edited Jun 27, 2008)

You know, this is really big news but I can't even get excited... Capcom has completely crucified and bastardized that which was Mega Man.

I won't buy a wii for this but it won't stop me from paying my neighbor to DL it.

yeah, sure... doubt that. Mega Man 2 was the perfect game at the perfect time (disclaimer: the game is not perfect but you get the idea)

Chris Jun 27, 2008

I managed to compile some good music details here.

SonicPanda Jun 27, 2008

I take this as 50% awesome idea and 50% shameless pandering, but Inticreates has my respect and I fully expect good things. I kinda hope Yamada isn't doing the music, honestly - his style doesn't fit as well as say...

RyoKawakamiRyoKawakamiRyoKawakamiPLEASE

*ahem* Anyway, I'm not quite as worked-up about the idea since I've never really lost my taste for Megaman (save Battle Network/StarForce bilge), so it seems less an imminent return to form and more a hollow plea for the love of erstwhile fickle fans who'd made up their mind as to when his fifteen minutes were up long ago. But I'm pretty sure I'll still love it, so what am I complaining about?

P.S. I'll step up to the plate for X8 anytime. X1, X2, X4 and X8 comprise the good entries in that series to me, personally.

GoldfishX Jun 27, 2008

I'd swap X8 with X5 and that's mine...Dunno, maybe I expected too much from X8, especially after the disaster that was X7 and it being 2D and all. It had some cool ideas (swapping), but it doesn't feel like it ever came together. Dying in a MM game should make me reach for the continue button, not the eject button.

Speaking of which...I do enjoy the stuff from Inticreates, but the overworlds and excess junk in the Zero and ZX games make them hard for me to stay interested nowadays or to go back to after a long period (especially the first ZX...went back to it after a few months, spent an hour totally lost and put it away again...probably for good). Too bad, since they got the controls and platforming action down pretty good. Same song and dance with what Castlevania has become.

the_miker Jun 28, 2008

Props to Capcom and Inti Creates for this one.  Konami and Sega should follow suit with Castlevania 5 and Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and all will be right with the world.  Enough with the horrible 3D games already.

Rockman 9 Original Soundtrack.. hmm.. yeah, I like the sound of that.  New chiptune music ftw!

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too late for that.

Amazingu Jun 29, 2008

I'm kinda torn on this too.
The old 8 bit games were great, and they still hold up incredibly well today, but I don't know if that justifies an actual NEW game in the old style...
I appreciate the idea, but I would be happier had they made a new game in the old style, but with updated graphics and music.

That, and I prefer a retail version, still having no Internet connection in my appartment (>_<)
If they're going to release an OST, then please include an arranged version as well (after all, this IS Inticreates)

SOLD.

This is almost April Fool's-caliber news to all classic Mega Man fans across the land.

I second anyone who feels let down by today's Mega Man generation(s).

Kenology Jun 29, 2008 (edited Jun 29, 2008)

I feel the 8-bit throwback approach of this title is nothing short of awesome.

It's new and fresh, yet nostalgic all at the same time... and will take me back to the days where graphics didn't mean shite, and only great gameplay and awesome chiptunes made a game stand out.  Day 1 download, fo'sho.

I like Malstrom's take on this as well.

Just an added note: how old-school do you think they'll go in terms of modern conveniences of save states? Password screens, anyone?!

Knowing Capcom, by the time they're done with this game, it's very possible we'll see a Saturn port in a few years.

XISMZERO wrote:

I think this would depend a lot on how hard the game ends up being. Save state is nice to have in games like Mega Man 5 and Mega Man 7 (never did beat those playing via cart) but if it's something like Mega Man 6 (which was a blast but way too easy) it shouldn't be a problem. The problem with save state is you get really spoiled... I was so spoiled that playing the games on the Anniversary Collection was so unattractive when I started I said screw it.

All I have to say is their better be damn energy tanks... seriously, the fact there were none in after Mega Man 7 was just wrong.

Oh, and the best thing about their being a Mega Man 9: that whole "Mega Man & Bass is Mega Man 9" debate is finally put to rest.

It's especially nice knowing Naoshi Mizuta was only relegated to composing part of a spin-off than an actual game in the original series...Removes that layer of tarnish for me.

I'm sorry, but if MM8 and Rockman & Forte (already a step back in terms of technology!) were crap, what makes you think Capcom can suddenly pull out a great Megaman game again, just by making it oldschool!?

One thing I definitely agree with is that some games have become way too freaking complicated.  Now that I have a PS3, I've been downloading demos from the PS Store to see what's out there, and some of these are so freaking complicated that I lose interest after a few minutes.  I tried out Civilation Revolution and Condemned 2 tonight, and the sea of options in the first and move combinations in the second is dizzying.  No thanks.  They need less stuff like this and more stuff like PixelJunk Monsters (demo for that one had me *this* close to clicking on the "buy full game" link).

GoldfishX Jun 30, 2008

Yup. I realized this awhile ago and I continue to realize it. One of the reasons Guitar Hero hit me so hard (because of the the simplicity...it's an arcade game at heart) Whenever I read the reviews for a lot of games, I almost think how exhausting it would be to have to play everything if I were a game reviewer.

Even what I said about the Zero/ZX games...They'd be mindblowing if they'd have just ditched all the excess BS and made them straight-forward platformers.

Dunno how you took that away from what I said.  I didn't say anything about the quality of the game.  I just said the retro graphics and sound have me intrigued and make me reminisce of the good 'ole days.  Of course, I'm hoping the essence of what made so many 8-bit, old-school games so great finds its way into the title (beyond the audio/visual presentation), but I'm hopeful and confident it will.

I dunno - it'll be hard to be nostalgic about a game you've never played before.

lol!  The 8-bit look and sound of the game is nostalgic.  Certainly we've seen those 8-bit graphics and heard NES chiptunes before.

I know not everybody likes 8-bit games because of nostalgia as McCall pointed out... but I'm only speaking for myself.

EDIT: The game is coming to XBLA and PSN as well.

What the hell do you expect from a game from the Civilization series?  It's actually streamlined from the PC game on which it is based.
