Anybody planning to bite on this one?  The just-announced fifth and final new character Decapre looks kind of interesting.  (OK she's basically Cammy in blue with red eyes but still kind of interesting.)  I'd say they've gone overboard on the other hand with the character Hugo.  Also I could do without anime cut scenes in these titles - too much of a contrast with the main aesthetic.  Still, having skipped Super SFIV it's tempting to catch up with this one.

I'll probably pick it up at some point. I had a ridiculous amount of fun with SSF4.

GoldfishX Mar 17, 2014

I spent a good part of the night last night lamenting this new character is just a palette swap of Cammy. Disappointing, but it's to be expected, considering Capcom has made a habit out of swapping heads on karate men. The other 4 new Ultra characters are just sprite rips from Street Fighter X Tekken (which essentially died a few months after release and has been slowly decomposing as a viable game for the past couple years, thank god) and have been reconfigured for the SFIV engine. Oh well, at least Rolento is in. He's always been a popular character.

I rarely play SFIV, but I'll probably end up picking it up just to keep pace. There are enough noteworthy changes that it should be a worthwhile update/rebalance from a tournament perspective.

Amazingu Mar 17, 2014

Yeah, the last one I played was Super, and I might be tempted to upgrade, since I heard it was only $15 or something.
Gotta get in on that Rolento action.

Also, man, I want a new Alpha game.

absuplendous Mar 17, 2014

I haven't picked up any iteration of IV, and I'm not enough of a fighting game man to appreciate the subtle changes from revision to revision. I will likely pick up the latest edition of IV once it's certain to be the last.

Recycling characters' physical assets was a bit more forgivable when every frame had to be "drawn," but less so today. If they were going to go with a Doll regardless, Decapre's hardly the most interesting design-wise; even during her debut, which consisted of just a few sprites, it felt very lazy to just draw a mask over Cammy's face. They took the time to make unique heads for all the others; they couldn't bother to do one more? On the other hand, I do welcome bringing an obscure supporting character into the playable fold, and I'm very okay with the Russian accent.

I'd love an Alpha revival, too; IV's presentation (sound and visuals) is part of what kept me from falling in love with the franchise all over again.

Yeah, I didn't dig the whole "roid rage" look either...

Amen to that. The backgrounds have not aged gracefully at all, nor has the music. At least Marvel has a number of stages I enjoy playing on. SFIV has the eclipse stage and the jungle and I guess the training stage. I'm more or less okay with the sprites, it looks better than I had initially pictured a Street Fighter in 3D being (in other words, looks way better than the EX games).

My huge problem with the game early on was the pacing was so slow for SFIV and Super. AE and AE2012 seem much more geared towards offense and subsequently have been much more entertaining to watch (I get hype whenever a good Viper is playing). That said, I never want to see another Justin Wong vs Ricky Ortiz Rufus mirror again as long as I live. *yawn*

Yup, I'll be picking it up Day 1 because I'm an SF whore. I'm disappointed with the choice of Decapre as the 5th "new" character (should have been Karin!), but whatever. All I really want for this series is for Capcom to redesign the controls so you don't have to have $150 fightstick and overly complicated motions and multiple button presses. I'm tired of knowing exactly what move to pull off and then not being able to actually do it because the motions and button combinations are so complex.

As for Alpha, I would love to see an HD port of Alpha 2 Gold and an all-new 2.5D Alpha 4 at some point. Loved that series!

HD ports would be nice, but I'd prefer something new, and I'd most definitely like to see a full 2D one.
Hand-drawn sprites and backgrounds please.

I'd love that too, but the odds of that happening are slim to none. Capcom would never be able to justify the cost.

Anyone else went for the digital upgrade today? Downloaded via PSN this morning, can't wait to give it a go later tonight.  You folks up for a few rounds? :)

Looking forward to playing as Poison in a game that doesn't suck. *glares at SFxTekken*

Amazingu Jun 3, 2014

I have to wait for the Japanese upgrade, which isn't coming out until August :S
Unless the US upgrade works on the JP version of SSFIV? I doubt it though.

Ashley Winchester Jun 3, 2014

Not to sound like a troll, but I've lost count... this is the fourth version of this game, right?

God, Capcom really must be out of money.

GoldfishX Jun 3, 2014

Fifth.

SFIV. SSFIV. SSFIV: AE. SSFIV: AE2012. USFIV.

Just pisses me off they can't fix Marvel 3 because they were idiots and lost the license. Again.

What's with Marvel licenses nowadays, Capcom lost it quite oddly, same with the new Deadpool game, Activision doesn't have license for that anymore. Game was released june last year, and buyable digital copies went away january first this year. Physical copies can be still bought though, which is good, I still want to play the damn game, but would have preferred to play on PC.

I haven't looked into it but my guess would be Marvel is aggressively trying to re-acquire them the same as they are with the film franchises.

Loaded up the update but probably won't have time to get online with it until Friday night. Will happily accept beatings at that time.

People act as if this is a new thing.
How many versions did Street Fighter II get?

There was SFII, SFII Turbo, SFII Hyper Fighting, Super SFII, Super SFII Turbo, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few, and that's not mentioning the MANY ports.

At least the latest update to SFIV is only $15 (which adds all the Arcade Edition stuff as well) if you have SSFIV.
Back in the day you had to pay $60 for each new game, because downloading updates didn't exist.

I know it's not a new thing... but if Capcom had some actual money develop something else (and not have made so many dumb ass decisions) we might not be having this conversation. Yes, this is the same deal as SFII but it is being done for a different reason.

I mean that is pretty much their strategy anymore, right? DLC out the ying-yang?

GoldfishX Jun 4, 2014

What needs to be said is how many people did their constant re-releases turn off back in the SFII days. Those weren't $15 upgrades, those were $80 SNES carts. I loved World Warrior, but when it came down to choosing between, say, Zelda III or Hyper Fighting, there was no contest. Likewise, Street Fighter 3 was never popular in the states until the mid-2000's and 3rd Strike is still the only one really played. Nowadays, there is more of a demand because of the number of tournament players and player feedback is taken into account. That said, Capcom seems clueless on how to use their IP's at this point. At least SOMETHING is happening with SF.
